It has given them a community
I think this is a key bit in the whole discussion. In today's fragmented world, where "individualism" is wildly celebrated, finding community turns out to be essential to our humanity. Me? I like this one here, among other positive gatherings for good.

As to healthy food sources, we recently saw a new documentary movie I recommend, if it happens to come your way. The Big Little Farm is the story of an idealistic (and tremendously hard-working) young couple who purchase 200 acres of damaged (drought and soil exhaustion) California farm property, in order to practice sustainable, natural, and self-renewing agriculture.

They discovered immediately that "pests" are only pests if they are not being consumed by the next "pest" up the food chain. It took years for this chain of natural renewal to produce the bounty they were seeking in their orchards and vegetables and animals.

It's a beautiful film. But creating "Eden" out of the desert is not easy.
