Default Tangerines/Citrus

Tangerines have never been on any low-carb fruit list that I've ever seen, yet a whole fruit only has about 10 net carbs.

Is there a reason to avoid the tangerine or other citrus fruits? I always see berries and apples recommended, but not citrus.

Oranges and other citrus are allowed fruits are South Beach, phase II though and in a very limited way.
Not pineapple as its very high on the GI.

I personally don't think you need to avoid any real, natural foods IF your body can handle them (ie no cravings, weight gain, symptoms, etc.). Just be conscious of the number of carbs you are on. I wouldn't recommend using 1/2 your carbs on one piece of fruit.

Thanks Judy!

Freckles, I agree, you must be mindful of the amount. I am experimenting with carb cycling and pushing 50-80 carbs during up cycles. The tangerine is a nice little treat!

If you were to peel that tangerine and arrange the sections in the bottom of a measuring cup, it would probably make half a cup.

That's roughly twice the carbs of berries; probably why it is on a higher rung in Atkins, for instance.

As Werebear said, citrus fruits are a rung 7 OWL addition on Atkins. So if your body can handle them then you can include them in your menus.
Though a 5 net carb serving isn't very large

I love tangerines ... There aren't any fruit that are "off" my list; I just don't eat fruit very often, by itself, or in large quantity (Concord grapes in season are a notable exception!) because it just makes me hungrier. Go figure. So I eat little bits of it -- because I think it's important to my overall health -- mostly as a side dish to meals. I cook with fruit sometimes, too, adapting other recipes like a cranberry chicken stew to make them lower in carbs.
