Default Barefoot Running

Hopefully this is the right place to put this. I just heard this on NPR. Many Kenyans (including Olympic runners) run barefoot. Running barefoot is different than shoes because you land on the ball of your foot rather than the heel. They found that there is less shock to your body, but need more strength in your calf and feet muscles to run this way.

Capmikee runs barefoot (I do it sometimes, too). He recently did a five mile race barefoot.

I run in Vibram Five Fingers, which are as close as you can get to barefoot while still having some protection. I have become a disciple of barefoot running, preaching the gospel to anyone who will listen

I'm not really a runner, but found this interesting because when I do run I don't always strike on the heel. I also had problems with my hips being sore when I tried to run conventionally. Maybe this will help with that too.

My husband kept telling me I had to run more on my heel, but it seemed to tire me out more and wasn't as fun. I like to run more like a gazelle.

Maybe if I try again and run barefoot style it will be better.

I land on the balls of my feet when I run. The achilles is your first impact zone, the knee is second. This is our natural shock absorption technology. When you land on the heel, the leg is straight and the impact is much harder on the body. Now you are relying on the cushion of a sneaker to support (not only your weight, but )the impact your body makes (which is probably 4x greater.
