Question Atkins: Reversal Diet?????

What is this "reversal diet" that Atkins speaks about? Supposedly another low-carber says its in the book and it sometimes helps to break a stall? Anyone heard of it (I don't have my DANDR handy to look) and/or tried it? Does it work?

Hi Yvonne

I just looked in my book - well the index and there is no listing for Reversal Diet - that dosen't mean its not in the book but you'd think if it was it would be listed in index?

The "reversal diet" is just that -- the opposite of Atkins. High carb, low fat. (So unfortunately, no fun at all )

The reversal diet is mentioned in the yellow cover 1992 DANDR. You notice it's not in the new white covered one. Probably it set off more carb addicts than it helped as a stall breaker.

Always tweaking the plan for the benefit of low carbers everywhere.

Now, if he only would tell people that they can't eat bars during induction, he'd help even more people.

I think you're probably right with that, Beth. Because the reversal diet almost inevitably involves a high carb diet, it can send people off on a binge of epic proportions, rules or no rules.

The deal as I understand it with the reversal diet was that you you went off low carb for 2-3 days and onto a different weight loss plan. It had to be an organized weight loss plan, (not just a carb free-for-all), like Weight Watchers, low fat, low calorie, whatever you choose, but it had to have rules and you had to follow it exactly. After 2-3 days, you went back to low carbing again. He did caution that a weight gain was almost a surety while on the reversal diet, but I think the idea was to shake things up a bit to help break a stall.

I think it's no small coincidence that it's not in the newer versions of the book.

I have no cravings anymore and I love that. I am glad that Dr Atkins is still working on making this way of life as good as it can be and that decided to leave it out of his book.
