I read this article a while ago. It was enough to make me read ingredients more closely and to avoid foods containing hydrogenated oils. People with auto-immune diseases such as diabetes should not be consuming hydrogenated oils.

The article is called: Hydrogenated oils, The Silent Killer.

http://www.dldewey.com/

Scroll down the right hand side until you see the article. You may be surprised. I don't even use Pam anymore, instead I bought one of those spray pumps that you fill with olive oil & pump the top up & down until it is under pressure and will spray.

Excellent find Norma. I never saw such oil pumps, but they sound useful. Are they widely available?

Lightbulb Oil Pumps

Yes they are ... in those kitchen stores that sell baking pans, measuring spoons, kitchen gadgets, etc.

I paid $15.00 for mine, it's plastic, there is a metal one too for over $20.00

Thanks. I'll get me one of those ASAP.

I was made awre of hydroginated oils dangers when I read Protein Power. But I never thought of the PAM I use quite often. Actually the smell of PAM bothers me, but it's faster and more convenient than brushing with oil. Having a pump to replace PAM solves the problem. I'll use it for my next loaf. BTW did you check my recipe?

Those oil-sprayers are great aren't they? The plastic one I have is by Starfrit, and I bought it somewhere exotic like Canadian Tire, I think for $12.99. I really like it, but it gets gummy a bit. I might invest in a metal one (Scratch'n'Save Day at the Bay!)

On the subject of the article, it does my heart some good to read more on the evils of hydrogenated fat and margarine. For years they said butter was a killer, but they're finally waking up to see that just ain't so. Heart disease, diabetes and other chronic illnesses have increased exponentially since the invention of margarine and the massive use of hydrogenated fats in processed food.

I used to be a confirmed margarine user, but I'm finding now that a pound of butter lasts me two or three times longer - better flavor, so I don't need as much, I can cook with it without scorching, etc - I'm preaching to the converted aren't I?? Sheeeesh.

Thanks NormaJune, I've flagged that one, think I'll print it out to wave under a few noses.

Exclamation on the subject of Pam spray

I do use a non-stick spray too, sometimes plain oil or butter just aren't enough, especially with baking. I have a can of President's Choice Too Good to be True "The Virtuous" vegetable oil spray here, and it contains : canola oil, lecithin and propellant. (isobutane, which evaporates quickly)

The nutrition data says a 1-second spray has 9 calories, 0 gms prot. or carb. and 1.0 gram fat, comprised of 0.3 gm polyunsaturates, 0.6 gm monounsaturates and 0.1 gm saturates. That leaves no room for trans-fat, which means it's not hydrogenated.

I don't like the smell of the propellant either, I always spray way far away from my face!! Anyway, there is a choice, but you sure do have to read the labels.

Lightbulb Plastic Spray Pumps

I found that after 2 or 3 refills, the plastic straw-like thingy needs to be cleaned or it will not give off a nice spray (only a direct shot). So you have to wash the straw-thingy in hot soapy water.

I love it. I use olive oil or butter for my cooking/baking and I love the idea of using only olive oil and no other ingredients.

ciao,
Norma June

Hi Norma,

It's in the recipe section under bread, titled "Shepherd's Loaf". Enjoy!
