I just found coco nut oil very cheap in the International Foods section of Tescos. Tescos also have a no added sugar range of jams. Lidls seem to have there sugar free linessa brand ketchup in again too.

Hi have just joined the site

Aldi's Chicken & Asparagus soup in a tin, 69p, 2.4g carbs for half a tin. It is quite nice, I add black pepper, it is the lowest carb soup I have come across.

I can't get enough of black farmer sausages (any supermarket) 2-4 carbs each depending on type.

Don't they contain soya bean flour and dextrose? All the ones I found a year or so ago did.

I'm not sure, but I have lost 20lbs eating soya flour and dextrose - so it shouldn't matter should it? I just focus on my carb count...

Thanks

For you choc-a-holics:

Tescos & Co-op : Mini-milk ice creams - 4 - 6 carbs!!! delicious
Skinny Cow hot chocolate 4 carbs
Divine Chocolate 70% - 2.5 carbs per 10 g

ps. Apologies if you are being strict about certain types of sugars... I don't eat as much fat, such as limitless butter and cheese and keep an eye on my carb count only and it's worked for me!

Sorry I was just assuming from your stated plan that you were following Atkins, so would not be as far up the carbohydrate ladder to be using soya yet and would be trying to avoid sugar in products. My mistake!

Young's Fish in a bag, absolutely delicious 1g carb per portion + 20 minutes in the oven= fantastic quick supper.

Youngs and Birdseye aim to fish sustainably - buy fish that is sourced with sustainability in mind.

I'm a vegetarian as well as a low-carber so have an added challenge finding low-carb protein-rich food in the UK. Here's some common items on my list:

Asda

Dave's Ghost Pepper sauce
This is effectively carb-free because it's so concentrated you need only a few drops to spice up a curry. Nagas are not only stronger than scotch bonnets but also have a nicer flavour so I visit this store largely to stock up on this wonderful sauce alone.

Sainsbury's

Diet drinks and cordials (ranging from trace amounts to 1.5g carbs per 100ml)
They are the only supermarket I've found that use only sucralose to sweeten their diet drinks. Not only is it healthier adn doesn't cause weight loss stalls but the drinks taste as good as their sugared counterparts. Aspartame, found in most other supermarket diet drinks, has a very distinct "diet" flavour that I dislike.

Seriously Strong Spreadable - 1.5g(15.5g) carbs(protein) per 100g.
Also available from Tesco. The lowest-carb cream cheese I've found and very tasty when used in Oopsie Rolls or other savoury recipes. They also do flavoured ones for minimal extra carbs.

Tesco

Tesco Meat Free Burgers - 2.4g(10.3g) carbs(protein) per burger.
Lowest-carb veggieburger I've found in the UK so far.

Tesco Meat Free Hot Dogs - 1.7g(10g) carbs(protein) per 2 sausages.
Thaw, slice and marinade in Dave's ghost sauce to make fantastic veggie pepperoni.

Tesco Meat Free Lincolnshire Sausages - 4.4g(16.3g) carbs(protein) per 2 sausages.
Lowest-carb veggie sausages I've found in the UK so far.

Tesco Meat Free Bacon-style Rashers - 1.4g(4.5g) carbs(protein) per 2 rashers.
Wonderful when fried over medium heat in cocumut oil

Tesco Reduced Sugar & Salt ketchup - 2.4g(0.3g) carbs(protein) per tablespoon.
Sweetened with Sucralose. If anyone can find a lower-carb version of this elsewhere I'd be ecstatic.

Tesco Unsweetened Soya Milk - 0.2g(2g) carbs(protein) per 100ml.
Be sure to buy the chilled one in the dairy counter. The long-life ones taste revolting.

Wheat Bran - 1.2g(1.1g) per tablespoon.
Provides 3.1g fibre per tablespoon. I used this a lot as a fibre supplement for some time until I started using linseeds (from H&B) and psyllium husks (from eBay) instead.

Streamline 100% Fruit Raspberry Jam - 2.2g(0.9g) carbs(protein) per 10g serving.
Half the amount of carbs as their Reduced Sugar jam. A third less carbs than WeightWatchers jam. Sweetened with Sucralose. Not explicitly labeled vegetarian but ingredients seem to be: Raspberries,Raspberry Juice ,Fruit Juice (Apple and Pear) ,Gelling Agent (Pectin, Xanthan Gum) ,Preservative (Potassium Sorbate) ,Sweetener (Sucralose). Does contain fruit concentrate so not suitable for induction.

Free Range Eggs - Box of 15 mixed-size eggs for £2.50.
Cheapest source of ethical eggs if using in large quantities. If I'm not using so many I'll pay a bit extra for their packs of 10 organic eggs just because they are even better ethically.

Holland and Barratt

Note: H&B almost always have half-price offers on some of these:

Neal's Yard linseed - 500g for about £3.

Body Fortress Whey protein (various flavours) - 1.1g(18.3g) carbs(protein) per scoop.
Normally cheap at £25 per tub but regularly goes half-price so an absolute bargain. The natural flavour one is sadly still sweetened so not good for adding to savoury cooking but ok for adding to baked goods like Oopsie rolls (google them NOW if you don't know what those are).

Coconut oil - Hard to find elsewhere. Great taste and an anti-candida food.

Sugar-free chocolate bar - approx 2.5 net carbs per bar.
Sweetened with Malitol. They have a selection of these but read the labels on the back - only one has the effective carb count listed and that one is the lowest carb of them all. Cheaper than the Boots diabetic chocolate (which is itself cheaper than the Atkins bars). Don't buy this unless you ignore Polyols (almost indigestible sugar alcohols) in your carb count.

Poundland
Silicone Popsicle moulds -£1 each
Buy a fiver's worth and fill with Sainsbury's diet cordials. Much lower-carb cold treat than any pre-packaged lolly I've found and no aspartame.

Thanks Overlord, are you able to lose well on vegetarian low carb? I am having terrible trouble with meat at the moment, and perhaps I should consider this option.

Thanks overlord for the really informative post. Lots of things I hadn't thought of. I have 2 small children, who while aren't low carb, eat very little sugar. Diet cordial lollies sound great!

oh, I am not sure Sainsbury's diet drinks are OK, even though they are made with splenda, back in the days when I was drinking such things (quit all diet drinks) Sainsbury's drinks used to bloat me and stall me big time.

To answer several at once...

My daily weight loss has varied but my average loss seems to be stable at about 0.3 kg/day according to my Google Docs food diary.

I'm not sure I'd go as far as to recommend a 100% veggie low carb diet to a non-vegetarian though. Swapping out some of the animal products may help but, particularly during induction, the veggie plan can be a challenge. It certainly makes eating out anywhere quite difficult (I usually just end up having olives and a salad). My carnivore housemate had a much easier time of induction than I did.

Regarding linseed - I get the H&B brown linseed at a fraction of the price of the golden one. Probably not as healthy but it beats the wheat bran I was using as a fibre additive previously and I get plenty of omega 3 oil as a bonus.
At least one source seems to suggest there's little difference:
http://www.goldenflax.com/flaxseed-faq.html#goldvsbrown

Regarding the Sainsbury's drinks - I'm fortunate enough not to be sensitive to aspartame or sucralose but drink sucralose by preference because it tastes better. I find aspartame has a very obvious "diet" taste whereas sucralose drinks taste as good as the full sugar versions.

Unfortunately several people seem to have stalls with various kinds of sweetener and I guess you've just got to find what types and quantities work best for you.

Sadly my own fatal stall food seems to be cheese which is a real shame as it's my favourite.
