Default UK -> USA differences

I smile as I read these posts... as an American living in the UK I have struggled with many of these name differences... took me awhile before I figured out what Aubergine was... and I still learn things every day (i.e., Mangetout = snowpeas).

I'm posting because UK measuring cups are different than USA measuring cups (this might have been mentioned by I didn't see it...). It is okay as long as you don't mix the two (I have a set of each in my kitchen) in a single recipe. I believe the American set is slightly larger.

Another good site for conversions is www.allrecipe.com ~ I've printed out farenheit to celsius conversions (oven temps), grams/ounces etc... and posted them on the insides of my kitchen cabinet doors. It all still does my head in, so I'm glad there's an Atkins book that has UK words and measurements in it!

What I knew as Canadian Bacon in the states is very very similar to what I have found is 'regular' bacon here... I love the bacon here!!! and my scottish dh likes the streaky bacon in the states ... Of course, we love all bacon

Kielbasa is a sausage type of meat. Processed, I think ~

tempeh I believe(?) is kinda sorta like a vegan alternative to soy sauce (it is a dark liquid, I think.... used to be served with alternative foods at a restaurant I worked at a long time ago), you may be able to find something about it if you were to do a word search on google...?

Cilantro is the Spanish word for Coriander leaves... it is often found as a main herb seasoning in Mexican salsa.

There is an excellent book (not a low-carb cookery book) called "American Cooking in England" by Delora Jones ~ it gives lots of information on name differences, as well as some other cultural differences in the kitchen that exist between the UK and the USA. For instance, I didn't know that cuts of meat are different until I saw the diagrams in this book.

http://www.glencoehouse98.freeserve.co.uk/
is the book's website... I don't mean for this to be advertising the book... only that I've found it extremely useful.

I hope this has helped a bit....

Another vegetable I have added to my eating plan this week is Swede in Fitday it is called Rutabaga. Sainsbury's give the carb value as 2.3 g/100g.

Swede = Rutabaga

A British 'slow cooker' is an American 'crock pot'.

Just FYI, in North America (in Canada we use metric quite a bit more than in the US) 250ml is commonly used as a 1-Cup / 8 Fluid Ounces equivalent. So the measures -- such as measuring spoons and measuring cups -- are 'standardized' for easier-to-remember numbers, and aren't precisely equivalent.

Ok just a quick clarification ;

I understand that when the Veg etc. refers to oz it's Fluid Oz but what about the 3-4oz. Cheese a day.

Hi, there, JamieDoyle.

Ok, I'm drawing a complete blank on what "veg" is (an Author? a particular lowcarb Plan/Book?) but I can tell you that cheese, like most solids, is by weight so therefore are measured in either Grams or 'mass/avoirdupois' Ounces, not in Fluid Ounces which are volume measures.

So the mass Ounce is 16 to the Pound (old Imperial measure used in Canada before Metric, we don't use Stone) and 28.34 Grams each.

Like this:
Ounces -- Pounds ---------- Grams -- Kilograms
-- 1 -- -1/16th or 0.625 --- --28.3 -- 0.02834
- 16 -- -- 1 -------------- --454.0 -- 0.45400
-0.138 ---2.205 -----------1000.0----1.00000

Your 3 to 4 ounces is therefore approximately 85 to 113grams!

Default Hi Jamie !

I know this was posted months ago, but in case anybody sees it:

Being Norwegian and user of the metric system, I cannot manage this WOE without http://www.convert-me.com

Weight and Mass Weight measures, including metric, Avoirdupois (U.S.), Troy, Apothecaries, old Russian, Japanese, Thai, ancient Greek and Roman.
Distance and Length Measures of length, including metric, British and American, old Russian, Japanese, Thai, ancient Greek and Roman, nautical, typographical and astronomical.
Capacity and Volume Liquid and dry measures of volume, including metric, U.S., British Imperial, Japanese, Thai, old Russian and cooking.

Just great for measures ! Just put in the measure you have and it will convert til to every thinkable measure.... try it !

A quick google says that canola oil is made from rapeseed (the evil yellow hayfever things!) and that it's not good for you.

Cilantro = corriander

'Kielbasa' is Polish and Russian for sausage. it is usually a smoked sausage which can be eaten as it comes or cooked.

It looks like the Aussies use the American version of most terms too!
