I'm pretty sure anise and fennel are the same thing.
Suzanne Somers has a couple of recipes with fennel in her books. One is a simple side dish, just saute sliced fennel bulbs in olive oil, salt and pepper to taste, serve with simply prepared chicken or fish.
I've seen recipes with fennel mostly for fish, sometimes for chicken. You can eat the stalks like celery.
