My Fitbit tracks heart rate and can then display my heart rate during walks, classifying the rate as either peak, cardio or fatburning. Usually I get a small amount of time in peak and about equal amounts of time in cardio and fat burning. Yesterday when I wore my ice gripper thingies on my boots and trudged my way over varying surfaces from completely cleared to hard packed snow and ice, to degrees of mushy soft, my walk of usual length was entirely at fat burning rate, meaning my heart rate stayed relatively low, still high enough to be qualified as exercise but not at a cardio level. This is interesting since the walk was more grueling than usual. I suspect that I was using muscles I don't usually use to trudge through the various conditions plus the ice grippers on my boots slow me down a bit (but better slow than falling) so even though the heart rate information puts my walk at a lesser degree of intensity than usual, heart rate clearly isn't the only measure of effort.

I took the day off yesterday and did one long walk (as I typically do on weekends). I walked a 10K - 6.2 miles - in freezing temperatures and a stiff breeze. No ice, so the surface was good for walking. In these conditions I find that I naturally pick up the pace. I was toasty warm after the first mile and I finished the walk with an average speed of 3.6 MPH.

I think being sure-footed does make a difference. I was walking around on slick, slushy stuff a few days ago and just the added stress of it might impact HR. I find that I walk differently, too... head down, shorter steps.

Ken - I found my heart rate to be lower yesterday. By necessity I had to go more slowly and that must have lowered my heart rate despite the fact that it felt like the walk was taking more effort than usual. Since I don't really obsess about these things because I know I'm just going to keep walking without regulating how I walk according to my heart rate, I figure it's all good but I did find it interesting that I felt like I was working harder but my heart rate didn't reflect it.
