Default Acid Reflux

I have recently started The Carbohydrate Addicts Diet and can't find any information as to whether the occasional TUMS will throw my diet off track. Does anybody know? thanks.

Welcome!

I'm surprised you still need them, on Atkins you wouldn't. Find out what's causing the problem and eliminate it from your diet, though I don't think an occasional Tums would truly hurt you.

I think you could probably find sugarfree "Tums" or similar products on sale for diabetics alongside the regular sugarfull ones.

Maybe you can ask your pharmacist to get some in if they don't offer them already

Many people report that eating lowcarb improves their gastric issues, so hopefully this will only be a temporary problem for you.

hopefully your need for tums will decrease. once i cut out massive carbs, mine improved dramatically. in retrospect, i found that potatoes, bread, and tomato sauces were the basic cause. ymmv

hi-
The Hellers recommend that all OTC medication be taken with the RM- and that all AS 'candies' be eliminated (gum, mints, candies).
For real acid reflux your doctor might prescribe something.

A friend of mine uses baking soda and water. You might want to give that a try. I doubt that'd cause cravings.

Glad to see Eno replied as well, I didn't think the Heller's went for tums - as whether sweetened with sugar or artificial sweeteners they'd not want a med or supplement that is sweet at cm's.

I used to have wicked reflux, all gone once I lost some weight and began to only eat per the rules of CALP (yes, I agree atkins or cad or other low carb would/should give same benefit).

Looking for trigger foods can help, how full you are at bed time (eating earlier in the eve, and not being stuffed after your rm, can help).

Baking soda is insanely high in sodium. I use Tums as well . I'd rather not get osteoporosis from Nexium or Prilosec. I would take a Pepcid if it was really bad but not needing it anymore now

I also found that grains in general triggered acid reflux in me. Mostly wheat followed by rice. Now I've been off all grains for a few days and my acid reflux is gone. That's how I found out I was gluten intolerant... and more or less grain intolerant. I read Wheat Belly and it really helped motivate me because I had a hard time getting off wheat. I'd keep slipping and goinng back on it.. Now I'm finally off. I just had to make that decision that health and lower weight is more important to me that tasting bread. So .... check it out.
