Default 19 year old, looking for answers.

Hi

Im 19 years old and im a 6 foot 235 pound male. Back in Jan. 2003 i weighed 295 lbs. Here were my results from a blood test.

Cholesterol: Total 205, HDL 44, LDL 105, VLDL 65 and my Tri's were 273!
Fasting Blood Sugar was 107
Blood Pressure was 150/95

I then said screw this im losing weight i from then until now i have lost a total of 60 pounds. Just last month i had a cholesterol screening which was like this.

Total Cholesterol: 162
HDL: 42
LDL: 78
VLDL: 40
Tri's: 205
Fasting Blood sugar was 92
Doctor diagnoised me as having Metabolic Syndrome

Im upset about the Metabolic Syndrome being that im only 19 im feel like im 60. My blood pressure is somewhat normal around 120-135/65-80 but im taking 2 medications, Diltiazem 240 mg (calcium channel blocker) and Diovan 160mg. I really want to get off these medications, lose the rest of the weight, and get rid of the metabolic syndrome. I know if i do lose the rest of the weight that my blood pressure will be normal and wouldnt have to worry about metabolic syndrome.

I was a low fat/high carb person but got off of it only because for the simple fact there isnt any Low Fat forums!! lol. I never had any support and with these nice forums hopefully i can get ALOT of support. Oh just to let you know that the low fat does work but its really dull and boring. I missed my TURKEY!

I want to start the Atkin's and im aware of the Induction phase and the OWL and all of that.

I have several questions: PLEASE ANSWER!

Atkins has many books....which one do i read to get started??

Many people here has had their LDL cholesterol get lowered and others had it go through the roof! Why is that? Does it vary through each individual??

How much weight can you expect lose in a month?

Im pretty educated in these kind of areas, like with essential fats, and the difference between refined and complex carbs. Im aware of alot of stuff, thinking about changing my major to FOOD SCIENCE! Who knows maybe ill make my own diet one day!

thank you all have a good day.

Hi Great, I think you are on the right place to get a healthy way of life!

I am no specialist in metabolic syndrome, but I have seen many people on low carb diets state they got cured from very serious syndroms. So good luck with your initiative.

Like some I don't do a strict diet, just no simple carbs most of the time. Lots of healthy food when possible. If you use search in the Atkins Diet subforum you will find all you need to know.

This one triggered me especially to react. I myself have very high LDL, and very good other values. I have the impression there are good LDL subsorts, and maybe I have these. I am not sure yet, but I also know of some very sportive and healthy persons with high LDL.

Best advise I can give you: forget about weight and start looking at how fat you look in the mirror. When that changes to looking how sexy you look naked you will never worry again about the weight!

You can start right now, one thing I find most important is to make you own variant of a major diet and make it easy and fun so you can maintain it over a longer period of time, if you like it, make it your personal WOL

Good luck!

Building or loosing has nothing to do with the kind of diet as far as I know (for normal people in normal diets).

Just do strength training to maintain or grow muscle and you will be fine. I grow muscle with 45 min, once a week of slow, safe and heavy lifting. Slowly I go to a lean and muscular posture, which I like very much

Welcome to the forum... My LDL did not go down while low carbing... it did not go up either. I am now on Lipitor .. but my good level did go up and my triglicerides went way down!! I suggest the Atkins New Diet revolution book to start with... to keep muscle you need to exercise and it is wise not to lose more than a couple of pounds a week...

You want Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution, published in paperback in 2002. It's the most widely available Atkins book, has all the info you need and is very cheap in the US.

Good luck with it!
