Exclamation Veggie/PCOS/trying to conceive

I am new to "forum" and new to the low carb life...so please bear with me I was just recently diagnosed with insulin resistance...after 6 years TTC. I am having a VERY difficult time trying to be low carb and vegetarian. I've been vegan for a year but find it almost impossible to get enough calories and stay low carb as a vegan. I am disappointed to go back to "ovo-lacto" life...but the desire for baby is overwhelming! I have found very good info here and long for some support!

Default sending some support

Hi and Welcome,

I just wanted to say hello and to offer you whatever support I can. I am not a vegan, but I do eat a lot of soy proteins and have significantly increased the number of fruits and veggies in my diet over the last few years. I am following the zone program and I know dr. sears has a lot of ideas for vegans. I also just believe in supporting people who are trying to make healthy choices in their lives. I am interested to know what your goals are and why you chose this way of eating. Perhaps if we know what some of your main objectives and needs are, we can provide some specific suggestions and refer you to specific people or resources. What would you list as priorities right now?

Default well....

to be honest....my only reason and priority is to get pregnant. I feel being vegan is as healthy as it gets. So health is not the issue for me....but my infertility specialist diagnosed me with insulin resistance (after 7 yrs TTC) and started me on glucophage. He prescribed a low carb diet for me. To be honest (and probably bold to post here) alot of the ideas seem to be less than healthy on "adkins" type diets...so I am hesitant. I worry about the high intake of fats, oils and etc. But as I have said in other posts, the desire to finally have a baby (I have miscarried twice) overshadows some of the reservations I may have. I have found lots of good ideas in this forum....it is the best I have found. I am just trying to overcome some of my "set" ways of thinking, for me this is just a temporary way of life. I know that I will always need to "watch" my carb intake, but I don't intend to restrict myself quite as much as I am while I am TTC. I have alot of reservations....so I hope this makes some sort of sense to you!

Default Suggestions

Hi Again,

Given your current goals and reservations, I would suggest you get a reference pile of LC books and just spend some time reading about the different approaches. There are many different options and I bet one or two will surface as workable for your goals and lifestyle. There is a lot of information on this site, but I think the actual texts may provide you with the kind of health information that you are looking for. Some plans are more appropriate for vegetarians than others. I see a lot of differences in the kinds of recommended fat, minimum protein and carb requirements, importance of exercise, etc. Has your specialist recommended a specific plan?

Unhappy Well....yes

My specialist did recommend a program (unfortunately he does not have much experience with vegans) his program is called the Insulin Control Diet...which breaks down to 40 total carbs and 650-1000 calories PER DAY for women in the weight loss phase. This is to allow for 2-3 pounds of loss per week. This is inconceivable for me due to the fact that IF I only consume 40 carbs per day...I get no where near 650 calories....let alone 1000. That is if I don't eat dairy or eggs (vegan). I recently visited with a dietician who put me on a plan of 202 carbs and 1800 calories a day. I actually have been doing what you suggest in that I am reading everything that I can get my hands on...CALP right now. I am pretty much doing my own plan as of now. I am feeling better about it now...I went through a downer the other day. But now I am trying some low carb products and really just trying to be as careful as I can without changing my vegan ways. I truly want to remain vegan....but it looks as though I will have to be vegetarian for a while (at least until pregnancy). Thank you for the support!!!! I always appreciate when someone lets me know some ideas!! I am going to do this....I am determined.

Default another question

Hi Again,
I am wondering what sources of protein you turn to on the vegan plan? During my pregnancies I followed the Bradley Method which, among many other things, emphasizes diet both before and during pregnancy. Larger amounts of protein (at least 75g/day) were considered essential. At the time, I didn't use soy sources and I found myself really having to adjust my eating patterns to get those proteins. I have trouble imagining how I would have been able to manage as a vegan. Even now, I eat about 90--100g of protein a day. Currently, I turn to dairy sources (cheese & yogurt) and soy protein. But we also eat meat. Just curious about your sources of protein.

Have you started a log on the journal forum? That would also be a good thing to do.

Default Protein

Well..most of my protein sources do come from soy...I drink soy milk, eat soy yogurt, soy cheese, soybeans and most of the "meat" alternatives I eat are fortified with soy protein. I eat lentils also. I love chickpeas which have 7.5 grams of protein per 1/2 cup. I love tofu which helps also. I have never found protein to be a problem. I have tried to be good about logging my intake in the journal...but I am not the worlds best about it. Actually...my last entry was kinda down But I do feel better now...I have just decided to do my own "low carb vegan" diet and see where it gets me for now! I just can't seem to give up my vegan lifestyle....so for now that is the "plan"

Thanks for the support! You are truly kind!

~Daisy~

Talking Insulin Resistance Diet

My daughter has insulin resistance and I was just diagnosed with diabetes. She and I are both ovo-lacto vegetarians. I started the Insulin Resistant Diet 5 weeks ago. It's a lower carb program, not quite as extreme as Atkins. You eat balance your carbs and proteins and only eat a little every 3 or 4 hours. Lots of veggies, etc. I've lost 15 pounds in that 5 weeks as a vegetarian and it has not been too difficult using the soy protein substitutes. I also have eaten beans, nuts, cheese (low fat) and eggs during that time for protein. On this diet one serving of fat free, sugar free ice cream is considere a protein source. My kind of program!! Any way just wanted you to know about the program, it is really working for me and allowing me to continue my vegetarian belief.

Default hey Pamlose...

hey Pamlose,
I'm interested to know more about the diet you are following...I think I'm kind of on a similar plan that I made up based on a combo of different low carb diets....I don't like the idea of going as low carb as Atkins, but I DO like the idea of cutting out all of the high-carb, low nutrition foods like pasta and white bread that I practically lived on before. I've been eatting lots of fruits, veggies, protein, and fiber-filled carbs. But I'm wondering exactly what the structure of your program is? Is there a certain fat/protein/carb ratio that you're following?

I'd love to know more!
Suzy

The Insulin-Resistance Diet
by Cheryle R. Hart M.D., Mary Kay Grossman R.D.
(if you look for this on Amazon.com, it's $11.96 and worth every penny.

Basic program is based on link and balance. For every carb you eat (preferably high fiber) you balance with one protein. You can eat two carbs and at least 2 proteins every 3 or 4 hours.

1 carb = 15 grams/1 protein = 7 grams

you can eat lean protein and veggies basically any time you want. But never more than 30 grams of carbs at any one sitting and not again for 3 hours. I'm making it sound confusing, but it's very clear in the book. Lots of info, examples, menus, recipes. They encourage you to eat well balanced meals, lots of variety. Basically I just make sure what I eat has no more than 30 grams of carbs, and if I want more I can have it in 3 hours. I find that I fill up easily on 2 carbs and 2 proteins, and quite often just eat protein and veggies. Helps curb my cravings for sweets too!!!

Any way good luck, hope this helped.

Thumbs up WOW!

Thanks so much Pamlose!!! Your info is great! I have really been doing my own "LC veggie" diet....But I like the sound of this plan you are on....I LOVE things like 30 carbs per meal with 14 grams of protein ....KEEPING IT SIMPLE!!! I don't know about anyone else...but I keep feeling obsessive about the various strategies I read about and that does not help me! I want something simple that I don't have to think too much about! Thanks again!!!
