Default New theory on diabetes

In this, the author describes a new theoretical cause of Type 1 diabetes. Useful to read if nothing else.

Makes sense, the immune system's job is largely to target foreign proteins, misfolded or otherwised damaged/faulty proteins are more likely to be targeted as if they were foreign.

I am sure this is actually a good thing: unless your proteins have been so deranged it creates far more mayhem than the system expects to need to clean up.

And you could see how, if the immune system can misfire, targeting native proteins that resemble food or pathogen proteins in some amino acid sequences, maybe it could learn from misfolded proteins to target even properly folded proteins.

The results of the study give Roep new insight, he said, for his work in developing new vaccines to desensitize the immune system so that it will tolerate islets again, as well as for research into combining immunotherapy with more traditional diabetes treatments to reinvigorate islets.

Very interesting, when you look at Valter Longo's recent study using his "fasting mimicking diet" to reverse a model of type I in mice, and his previous study showing a sort of "reboot" of the immune system with fasting. This study plus Longo's immune system study sort of predict that Longo's most recent will have been successful.
