Hypo-Palatability. "Lite" low-fat foods taste like crap so you are never satisfied by them and end up eating more, therefore you get fat.

Some new ones discovered today:

Central Heating. Central heating means your body needs to expend less energy to heat itself, reducing calories out, and therefore you get fat. (Corollary: Air Conditioning should make us skinny. Also, Grok must have been a really good calorie counter in order not to starve to death in the winter. Or maybe he had a mirror that he checked himself out in every week so that he could know to eat more a bit more at each meal if he got too skinny because of the cold.)

Quitting Smoking. People gain weight when they quit smoking. Lots of people have been quitting smoking, therefore the obesity epidemic.

Central heating--not sure if this is in her yet, but the obvious. The myth that Inuit have an extra bit of fat as insulation against the cold. A similar thing is said of swimmers to explain differences in body composition vs. other sorts of athletes, I've seen insulation as well as buoyancy suggested. But it's like saying that running marathons makes you very lean because the guys who win them are very lean. Do marathons make you lean--or do people who carry less fat to start with tend to be the people who win marathons?

Childhood obesity--at least the kids are getting off the smokes.
