The study is fascinating - I do agree also with your personality having much to do with this. However another factor is finding what works for you and is sustainable. Things change as we age bodily so being able to adapt and persevere is necessary. I think the key is never giving up. Once you realise the cost of that extra fat to your whole system its hard to accept it and just live with it.
Sadly, aging is associated with loss of cognitive skills, and I think that's all this study is measuring. On both sides of the family, we've seen the stubborn crankiness that impeded adjustment with some of our older relatives.
On the other hand, better nutrition can head this off, even improve matters. So that's my takeaway from it.

Instead of living to eat, I eat to live. I'm 52 pounds down because of that.
I'd agree so far as eating only for entertainment is wrong. But I think the natural state of affairs is, animals enjoy what keeps them alive and continues the species. Meshing enjoyment of life with what's conducive to life seems practical. Food reward can go askew, but it's there for a reason.
