Default Fasting insulin levels

I just had mine tested at it was 5.5 on a scale that went up to 24.0. It wasn't as low as I was hoping it would be.

I'm just curious if anyone else had numbers to report on it?

Nancy, that is insulin right, not glucose? Yesterday, a low car doctor who I am friends with on FB, asked me to eat a breakfast with some toast then check my glucose every 15 minutes for 2 hours. My 5th glucose reading was 119. It jumped to 139 by the time I read it again, 15 minutes later. The next check it returned to 119. He said that that little amount of bread caused the spike in glucose but thanks to the eggs and hotdogs that I consumed, my insulin brought my levels quickly and efficiently...I don't know if that helps or not.

I found this:

The insulin tolerance test (ITT) is not widely used, but is one method for determining insulin sensitivity (or resistance) especially in obese individuals and those with PCOS. This test involves an IV-infusion of insulin, with subsequent measurements of glucose and insulin levels.

If someone has developed antibodies against insulin, especially as a result of taking non-human (animal or synthetic) insulin, they can interfere with insulin testing. In this case, a C-peptide may be performed as an alternative way to evaluate insulin production. Note also that most persons with type I diabetes will also have autoantibodies against insulin.

Right, Fasting Insulin (not fasting blood glucose) is a good measurement of insulin resistance. That's why I was hoping to compare numbers with other low carbers.

Unfortunately, I don't have those numbers, though it would be interesting to see the results. I am like you - metabolically resistant to weight loss, but I don't have clear reasons. My BG is perfect.

nancy, what's the lab range?
i don't know what normal is but i would guess that like glucose, there's always some floating around since it has a few purposes.
that amt doesn't seem very high.
is the low 0?

0-24 is the lab range on my paperwork. My naturopathic doctor said he likes it under 6, and 5.5 is barely under that.

Funny you should ask, I just got my results yesterday

different ranges though:

Insulin Fasting 90.9 pmol/L (15-130)

apparently combined with my fasting glucose of 5.9 mmol/L (3.3-6.0) puts me squarely in insulin resistance territory

also agree with the suggestion to get Free T3 tested, may also want to add in a Reverse T3 as well.
