Hey Linnea! a cow is a lot of work unless you have help (I run my place alone), but there's nothing in the world like fresh Jersey cream... though Guernsey cow owners say the same thing. If you don't know much about dairy cows, the best board I've found for dairy cow information and help is Keeping the Family Cow. Excellent site and very helpful members!

I see you weigh only 135 lbs, Lala. As one gets close to one's goal, one does have to consider calories, and one stick of butter is over 800 cals; multiple sticks of butter have that many times more calories. It's also possible that you are eating too much protein and carbs for all the butter you are consuming. Are you tracking your intake on Fitday or other program? If not, tracking might help.

Much as I love butter, it's probably not wise to consume multiple sticks of it. On the other hand, if you are new to LC and are craving good butter, it's possible you are good fat-deficient.

Hi Sagehill,

Haha I go to jersey every week for work actually and totally agree on their dairy products. Haven't tried guernsy products yet.
I have a serious tendency to overdo things if I read on blogs like this that something is good for weightloss (in this case, eat fat to lose weight theory??) so I just let myself go on fat like crazy! I was eating about 200g fat a day!! And was going over my cal limit (1500) to about 2000. I've gained about 6pounds and i hope it's reversible.
Though this has taught me a lot about insulin production etc and I feel like I can almost feel the insulin flowing when I eat something wrong. am I being crazy?

Of course it's reversible... it just takes a lot longer to take off than it did to go on.

Jenny Ruhl of Blood Sugar 101 fame has a new LC diet calculator to figure out what percentage of carbs, protein and fat you should eat and how many calories. I tried it out a couple of weeks ago and it was eye-opening... I now use her ranges for my age, height etc as my upper limit as I'm on JUDDD.

check it out!

Thanks for the link Sagehill! Very interesting stuff. So I brought it up to my husband about having a milk cow and he was like "sure". I was shocked, didn't think he'd actually go for it.... But here's why. We already have cows! Hehe, apparently simmentals milk just as well as any other cow. It's the milk he grew up on. I felt kinda silly actually...but hey, I am from Vancouver!

Homemade diary products here I come!

Wow thank you for this! Just checked it out and was a little confused: it says
"Required Protein Intake: 50 grams of high quality protein.
This would be supplied by: 8.4 ounces or 235 grams of a high quality protein food like meat, fish, eggs, or cheese, which typically contain 6 grams of protein." does this mean I should be taking 50g or 235g of protein?? 235g sounds rather a lot!?

A "protein food" refers to meat/fish/eggs/cheese which have "some" protein in them, so the website is suggesting you eat maybe 235 grams of these which might be giving you about 50 grams of protein (as well as some fat, maybe some carbs and some water)

It was a little confusing, I agree. I think Jenny Ruhl meant to say that most animal protein sources contain about 6 g of protein per ounce of food.

Like Elizellen says, 50 grams refers to the total amount of protein contained within your day's meat intake. For example, 175 grams (a little over 6 oz) of 80% ground beef contains about 30 grams of protein, so you should eat another 20 g of protein... 3 eggs or equivalent would do it. This is one reason why Fitday is so helpful.

This also means, if you are eating a lot of fat AND a lot of protein, even very low carb, it could stall you or even cause gains, especially if you are diabetic/pre-diabetic or near your goal weight. That's why I like that calculator... if I start stalling as I lose weight, I should recheck it occasionally to see if my P/F/C ratios change.
