I am just completing week 2 on the SBD -- and would love a forum devoted to it.

I would like to hear how others are doing with it, and learn how to tweak the plan to better fit me.....

I heard that the Clinton's are doing the South Beach Diet. The creator was on Bill O'Reilly the other night talking about it. It sounded pretty much like the Atkins diet to me, only he said the SBD only has three phases. That's all I know about it but would like to hear more. : :

Hi - I'm a South Beacher. I'll have to say that it is a wonderfully flexible and filling diet. I'd be interested in the forum too. This diet is different from Atkins in that you're not totally cut off of carbs. There is an initial weaning off (Phase 1) for 2 weeks, then you gradually start adding good carbs back in. Check out www.hippodamia.com for information regarding the 3 phases, eating plans, shopping lists, etc., without having to join the SBD site.

How is that different then Atkins? You are not suposed to completely cut out carbs, you have a 2 week induction period in which you cut down to 20 NET carbs a day. After that you add more carbs back in, starting with veggies and other good carb sources.

In Phase 1, you can have almost all vegetables (except root veggies) without counting CHO, low or reduced fat cheeses in moderation and nuts (also in moderation). No fruit, rice, pasta or baked goods until Phase 2, when you start gradually adding these things back in.

I bought the South Beach Diet book, and in the process of reading through it. My first impression is that except for the 2-week Phase 1, the diet is similar to Sugar Busters, and not like Atkins or other ketogenic diet. It's based on the Glycemic Index. The menus look fine, and would be an acceptable plan for someone who just wants to "cut down" on carbs and calories for weight loss.

I'm having trouble swallowing some of the health information in the first chapters of the book though. There are parallels drawn between the benefits of the SBD compared to Atkins, but no references or other substantions are offered, and some of the information is erroneous and misleading. Especially the information about saturated fats. And the claim that after just 14 days of phase 1 ... which can be up to 60g carbs per day including sugar-free desserts and chocolate ... insulin resistance and sugar addiction will be cured. Hmmmmm ...
