I bought the South Beach Diet book, and in the process of reading through it. My first impression is that except for the 2-week Phase 1, the diet is similar to Sugar Busters, and not like Atkins or other ketogenic diet. It's based on the Glycemic Index. The menus look fine, and would be an acceptable plan for someone who just wants to "cut down" on carbs and calories for weight loss.
I'm having trouble swallowing some of the health information in the first chapters of the book though. There are parallels drawn between the benefits of the SBD compared to Atkins, but no references or other substantions are offered, and some of the information is erroneous and misleading. Especially the information about saturated fats. And the claim that after just 14 days of phase 1 ... which can be up to 60g carbs per day including sugar-free desserts and chocolate ... insulin resistance and sugar addiction will be cured. Hmmmmm ...
