Question Holiday in Poland

I am still in the induction phase of Atkins and I plan to stay there at least another couple weeks or even longer.

But I am about to face my first BIG challenge.

I am going to Poland for a week's holiday in 2 weeks time!

How to survive and maintain my low carb diet in Poland!

Anyone familiar with Polish food and can help me navigate through this minefield?
I am keen to try traditional Polish food. For me cuisine is a big part of travelling.

I'm also thinking about maybe using carb-blockers so that I can be allowed the odd transgression.

Any tips?

I am going to the Polish neighbourhood of Toronto this morning to stock up on: Kielbassa which is the generic word for sausage. There are so many different varieties most of them smoked and all of them zero carb (or pretty close). If you like sausages, you will love kielbassa, they are mostly made from pork and flavoured with garlic but they are made from meat, no fillers, very little gristle and not very fatty.
They also eat a lot of ham, galoretta (headcheese - not my favourite), lots of fish, especially smoked fish and cabbage type dishes. My mother in law's (Polish) cabbage rolls don't even have rice in them, they're straight meat.
Stay away from Pierogi, meat/cheese filled dumplings.
You will find lots of braised and stewed meats on the menus and they are very low carb but they also eat a lot of potato.
Mushrooms are very popular (Grzybe).
Just head out with a little Polish/English dictionary and you'll be find.
I'm a chef and there's lots to love in Polish food.
It's very down to earth, simple food. You should have no trouble staying low carb if you keep a little bag of Polish sausage and cheeses with you.

Thanks for the tips.

I've heard that lots of dishes are served with sauerkraut. Is that high in carbs?

Hi there,
No sauerkraut is not necessarily high in carbs but it is all carbs. It's cabbage that has been in a brine, sometimes with salt, occasionally with vinegar. There's a great dish called bigos made from sauerkraut, kielbassa, cabbage and onions. Only the onions make it high carb.
Cabbage is my vegetable saviour. I love cabbage, I like it boiled, sauteed, in sauerkraut and in coleslaw. It's low calorie so it's usually a good choice, unless say it's braised red cabbage which is sweet and often made with apples and jam or sugar as the sweetener.
I'm guessing that low carb hasn't caught on yet in Poland so I'd take sweetener packs for your coffee (if you use it) and I'd tell waiter/waitresses that I was diabetic and couldn't have sugar (Sukier in Polish).

Good luck. Michelle
