That would be diabetic ketoacidosis, which is not comparable to dietary ketosis.

The best distinction I ever saw on this subject is taken from here: http://waroninsulin.com/nutrition/is-ketosis-dangerous

"What is diabetic ketoacidosis? When a diabetic (usually a Type I diabetic, but sometimes this occurs in very late-stage, insulin-dependent, Type II diabetics) fails to receive enough insulin, they go into an effective state of starvation.~ While they may have all the glucose in the world in their bloodstream, without insulin, they can’t get any into their cells.~ Hence, they are effectively going into starvation.~ The body does what it would do in anyone – it starts to make ketones out of fat and proteins.~ Here’s the problem: the diabetic patient in this case can’t produce any insulin, so there is no feedback loop and they continue to produce more and more ketones without stopping.~ By the time ketone levels (specifically, beta-hydroxybutyrate) approach 15 to 25 mM, the resulting pH imbalance leads to profound metabolic derangement and the patient is critically ill."

I was diagnosed with "diabetic ketosis". Nothing was done to deal with any acidosis, other than treat the diabetes itself. I am not a type I diabetic. Nor was I "late stage" type II at the time, in fact I wasn't diagnosed yet nor was I insulin-dependent. Neither was I "critically ill" at any time, in fact to treat it I just started taking some oral meds and measuring blood sugar, and that was about it.

It was rather dramatic though. I could eat whatever I wanted and lose weight. I really wasn't that impaired, though, other than constantly being thirsty and constantly having to urinate.

Maybe it was all the walking that made you feel so great. Aerobic exercise produces endorphins and other neurotransmitters that help alleviate both physical pain and mental pain like depression. Also keep in mind that Atkins has 4 phases. Maybe you need to skip induction and start in the ongoing weightless phase (OWL). Whatever you do just don't give up. Keep trying until you find what works for you and stay with it. Good luck!
