I have had 2 glasses of wine with dinner for the last 2 nights with no change in weight. Strips say I am still in ketosis.

Thanks...not sure if I want to give up one of the pleasures in life...think I will stick with a couple of glasses for a couple of nights a week and see what happens

Hi EGW,

It's funny, before I began LC, I always had at least 1 glass of wine with dinner, yet now, I only rarely bother. The strange thing is that I don't miss it.

Sure you can have a glass now and then, but just remember that your body will use alcohol as fuel in preference to anything else, so fat loss will be delayed. It's just a matter of striking a balance as to which you feel to be most important.

Cheers,

Rosebud

Go right ahead. Eades in Protein Power recommends it.

He states that several recent studies have shown wine (particularly red wine) to be an effective agent for increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin - the main goal of LC.

He is suggesting that it actually helps.

Wine does have some carbohydrate content left in after the fermentation process, so the drier the wine, the fewer grams of carbohydrate.

A good rule of thumb is that dry white and red wines contain about 1 to 1.5 grams of carb per ounce.

So once you are clear of induction....bottoms are up.

I also drink the occasional whisky. Although it contains no carbs at all and is not therefore fat producing it does affect weight loss as the alcohol is readily absorbed as energy and will be burned before the metabolism resorts to the little 'ol fat cells. Och well it will just have to be a wee dram the noo.

I returned to Atkins after several years.I did not show ketosis for three weeks until a friend came to stay and I had a vodka, crystalite and soda plus wine with dinner (white) The meal was scallops, prawns sauteed in white wine, garlic and cream plus salad. Next day #8 on the ketone scale .I wonder why? next day back to trace then negative.
I will test with same menu next week.
Has anyone else found this result ??

Hi Pippa,

One of the reasons that using ketostix can be a waste of time is that you will get a positive result after drinking alcohol. Unfortunately, it doesn't mean you are burning fat, just that you've ingested alcohol. And as I said earlier, the body will use alcohol as fuel in preference to anything else, thereby delaying any fat burning.

If you go to "Low Carb Tips" on the orange bar at the top of the screen, you'll find an article by Doreen T called "Ketosis and Ketone test Strips" where she explains more.

Cheers.

Hi there,

I am also a newbie and truly love this site. I started Atkins about 3 1/2 weeks ago ... and needed some support as well as information. Found this site last week and WOW !!! Exactly what I needed . Just learning to navigate around. Meeting new friends.

I guess I am one of many, over 50, who have started on the wonderful adventure of shaping ourselves, literally! hahahaha

Thanks for the advise on the wine ... ever so romatic ... and sometimes necessary ...

Glad to be here!

Boucy Chic
