Unhappy Watermelon

I LOVE fresh watermelon & of course, it is in season right now. I had NO clue what kind of carbs were in a watermelon!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!!!

I ate 2 fairly large pieces this morning and when I plugged it into fitday.com, got a huge shock! 41 g. carbs & 3 g. fiber. Woof! Guess I will be sticking to strawberries and cantelope.

Wow, hard to believe considering it's 99.9% water.

Bummer...watermelon is soooo yummy.

Thanks for the warning!

I was surprised it was so high. If you weigh a piece around 10 oz then that is around 10 carbs which should be OK. Remember it is best to eat fruit either as part of your meal or with some fat or protein to slow its digestion and hence no insulin spike.

Not a water melon lover myself, but have 1 peach a day at present.

I think Fitday's slices are a bit bigger than ours. 1 cup of Watermelon has approximately 10g of Carbs if I remember correctly. I believe one of their wedges is 1/16 or 1/32 of a Watermelon. Since a melon is 16" long and each slice/wedge is 1" thick, 1/16 would be cutting the Watermelon into 16 circular slices. That's alot bigger than a slice like we eat. Cut that in half for 1/32 and it would still be 2-4x the size of a regular slice of Watermelon.

According to the Atkins carb counter a serving of water melon is 1/2 cup ( 5 grams ). By sticking to the serving size you will be perfectly safe. I do not buy the whole melon. I always buy those pre-packaged pieces. Even if they are expensive, there is a big savings. No low-carber should be allowed to have a whole water melon in their fridge.

A cup of WM is 1.43g of carb and 0.7g of fiber
A Wedge of WM is 20.53g of carbs and 10.91g of fiber

This is from the USDA database:
The smaller number is for a cup of diced WM
The bigger number is for a Wedge (1/16 of a WM)

here is the link to the USDA database

Thanks Arie for the info. I wonder why Fitday's info is so different?...hmmmmm
Anne - you are right about the insulin spike. I noticed that I was much hungrier the morning I ate only the watermelon, as compaired to my normal protein breakfast.
black57 - Unfortunately, I have 2 other non-LC'ers in the house with me, so having a whole watermelon in the fridge in the summer is a common occurence. This was the 3rd on this summer & we are growing them in the backyard too!

Well, at least I know now I am going to have to watch the serving sizes - no more "slabs".

Default USDA - watermelon

Arie - I don't think think you are looking at the right line. When I access your link, I get the following:

cup, diced wedge
Carbohydrate, by difference g 10.914 20.535
Fiber, total dietary g 0.760 1.430

I got the same calculation as Minnat3. So, if you deduct the fiber count you end up with:

Diced Cup

10.154 carbs

1/16 Wedge
19.105 carbs
