Default Ideas for Pre- and Post-Workout Snacks/Meals

I'm looking for some ideas for pre- and post-workout snack and meals, other than a protein shake.

Interested to know what others have and if vary it depending on the workout - i.e., do you eat the same thing for a weight lifting session that you would for a cardio session?

Hi. For me-- I eat moderate carbs before weight training, which in theory burn off during exercise and give the extra energy needed to weight train. If I'm just going to do cardio-- either do it on an empty stomach or close to it. And of course if I'm doing both-- weight train first with carb-up meal an hour or so before, by the time I'm ready for cardio-- it's burned off and my body is forced to go hunting up stored energy (fat). My favorite carb-up meal is protein pancakes. They are the perfect pre-weight training thing to eat for me. Some days if during weight training I'm wilting fast, I have sweet tarts to boost my energy while weight training. After exercise I immediately take creatine, and within an hour try to get in a Whey protein shake or, sometimes another protein pancake. During and after weight training I think is when muscles are looking for protein and carbs-- they of course repair during rest time, but at the point of tearing them down, they're looking for nourishment. IMO. That's how it's situated in my head, at least.

Galatia, thanks for the info. I should have explained, however, that I need something fairly portable as I train during my lunch hour at work, so pancakes are not really viable.

I have been having an apple with un-sweetened peanut butter before lifting, but I'm getting a bit fed up with that!

Can you tell me what sweet tarts are exactly? - to a Brit they are a small pastry with jam, and I'm sure that's probably not what you mean.

There are a lot of snack bars out there. I've seen hi-protein bars but I prefer Balance Bars (TM) because the protein helps dampen the insulin response to the sugar. Stay away from the ones with chocolate coating and they'll be okay to store in a desk drawer. The ones with the coating get gooey at room temp.

Or you could make your own bars with oats, stevia, peanut butter, that sort of thing.
