hi lindsay,
You'll find that a carefully planned low-carb diet, combined with an exercise program will definitely help you lose fat weight and help to control your blood sugars. I'm having some concerns though, when I see that you're not following a specific plan, just cutting out carbs. Also, are you having proper medical supervision while cutting back on your insulin?
How long have you been diabetic? How often are you checking your sugars? What insulin are you taking and how? Multiple injections of short-acting, or one daily injection of long-acting? Or are you on a pump? How many calories are you eating, and how much protein? Are you having planned snacks? What type of exercise are you doing and when, in relation to your meals and insulin? How many more questions am I going to ask??
Type 1 diabetes is a whole different ball-game than for someone trying to lose weight who is producing too much insulin because they're insulin resistant. Your diabetes is for life, and how you manage it now while you're young will determine the quality of life later on.
Low-carbing can and will help you to normalize your blood sugars, but you must not only get the sugar down, it's vital that you keep it down and stable. Preventing the swings of high & low blood sugar is key to preventing the complications of diabetes ... kidney disease, cholesterol and heart disease, blindness.
Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution is an excellent book. Dr Bernstein is himself a Type I diabetic who has reversed most of the complication he was experiencing by following very tight blood sugar control with a low-carb diet, and properly timing his insulin injections and exercise. He became a dr. late in life, and has devoted himself to helping others with diabetes and insulin disorders. A couple chapters of his book are posted on his website, which Oldsalty has given you above. However, the real MEAT is in the book only, and I strongly urge you to make the investment in your health to buy this book.
Do follow up with this, and keep us posted how you're doing. I would really love to see you be healthy and successful with your weight loss.
Take care,
Doreen
