If you look at a range of greens and other non-starchy vegetables, you will find that the average protein content is somewhere around 25% to 35%. As a group they have more protein:calorie, making them richer in protein than nuts, seeds peas or beans.

I don't think so. I just went to http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/ and did some math. Broccoli is 12% protein by calorie, Spinach is 8%, zucchini and lettuce are about 14%.

That is besides the point though; vegetables are still a poor source of protein because you have to eat unfeasible amounts of them to get adequate protein intake in a day. You are choosing to rate the protein content by calories so that it makes it look higher. Rated by weight, leafy green vegetables are about 3% protein. Weight, or rather mass, is what counts on the plate. You would have to eat 3kg / 6.6lbs of broccoli to get 90g protein, and even then it would not be complete protein, because it is lacking in amino acids like Tryptophan, Methionine, and Cystine.

Flower51, do a google search for gluten-free vegan, there are a number of good-looking websites that pop up. I know that there is a whole list of gluten-free recipes at fatfreevegan.com. Your challenge is not being able to eat beans....does that include tofu (soybeans)?

But even so, I would still pick the steak. I had a little broccoli last night and I'm paying for it today with a painful rock-hard lump in my guts.

capmikee, sorry the broccoli gave you an upset gi system...really. But this is a "vegetarian" thread....lol....don't think I personally would be eating steak (ugh!).

I didn't bring it up, just commenting on this comparison.

He actually has a chart showing...guess what...broccoli has more protein per calorie than steak!!!! Spinach, likewise! Tofu is king, though, if you can tolerate it.

I'm sorry if it was out-of-place to mention my personal preferences here. Obviously in the real world we have a choice of more than just broccoli or steak.

Got back from the gi doc today. He says endoscopy is the gold standard. breath test next on the list. genetic blood work would determine celiac. I'm a big baby about medical proceedures. For good reason since the needle lung biopsy..
Anyway...my mil says endoscopy is no big deal....its over before you know it began. Anyone out there have one and have ok exp or not? T

Just discovered this fascinating quoted article about eating meat:

http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthre...80&page=5&pp=15

From the research I've read, I do believe that it is healthier to eat meat and animal fat than to eat vegetarian. Nonetheless, I am interested in, and have been looking for articles about vegetarian populations and health. Overall mortality, etc. Anyone care to share studies they know about? There are various vegetarian populations whose choice of diet is based on religious values. They live their whole lives as vegetarians.

Here is one interesting study of German vegetarians and "health conscious" non-vegetarians:

Lifestyle Determinants and Mortality in Germans

Part of my experiment has to do w/a diagnosis of cll...which is a chronic leukemia.

I understand that eating foods that cause acidity in your body such as grains, meat and dairy, create a more cancer friendly terrain in your body.
Best for alkalinity are certain veggies and certain fruits.

Complicates matters as I also was recently found to be anemic. May be due to a gi bleed. Maybe due to celiac. Maybe due to recent diet of not eating enough red meat? May be due to cll which would not be good.

So....once it is determined what the source of this anemia is, I'll be able to make more educated choices re increasing the iron and if need be, B12.
Today is the enodsc/colonsc so I should have some answers soon.

Terry

I too am revolted by the treatment of animals. Watching video footage of what goes on in most slaughterhouses makes me ill. I am now eating fish only, along with milk and eggs. I think it will be a challenge, but hopefully I am up for it!

Speaking of slaughterhouses, did anyone see the HBO movie about Temple Grandin? I'm sort of a fan, but we don't have cable. I'd be curious to hear about it.
