Default Turnip Fries

Hi,
I just tried this delicious turnip fries! They are low carbs and better than potato fries.

Here is the recipe if someone wants to try! :

Turnip fries are staple in our household. We peel them, cut them like fries and sprinkle them with black pepper, low fat parmesan cheese, a little salt, and spray them and the cookie sheet with olive oil. We bake them a 450 degrees in the oven for 30 min. We turn them every ten or 15 min. They are delicious and are not limited!!!

another version is to try dakion, its an asian radish. Its a root vegetable, quite big, long and white with a little green on the top part. You can peel it like a turnip and cook it similarly. When I lived in asia, I was on a low carb diet. There weren't any turnips, so I substituted turnips with these. I would sometimes slice it quite thin and fry it in some oil or butter and salt. It looked and tasted like onions for burgers. Yummmm!

My USDA listing says 8.36g in 1 cup cubed (of which 2.3g is fiber)...

I haven't eaten a turnip since I was made to as a kid. But I can't remember why I didn't like them. The thought of enjoying it is kind of scary...

I love turnip fries too ...I normally cut them quite thinly and then coat with oil and a bit of chilli powder ... put them in the oven to let them do their thing and then enjoy ...

Steve - they are SO much nicer than the childhood nightmare of turnips (shuddering as remember other childhood delights such as pickled beetroot and schoolmeal liver and onions ... sickbags ahoy!) ...

When you talk about turnips, do you mean white turnips or the more commonly seen rutabagas. I know rutabagas are often called turnips.

Hi clk:
Good question. So I searched the web and found this.

Turnips are smaller, round about 2-3 inches in diameter. Creamy white skin that shade to purple/pink. Sometimes the tops are still on.
Rutabagas are the ones I think we are more familiar with in Canada (I have always called them turnips too) that are larger, yellowish to a purple, and always sold with a layer of wax.

According to the web site I checked out they have different carb amounts.
1 cup of Turnips - 8g carbs - 3.1 fiber = 5.1g carbs

1 cup of Rutabagas - 15g carbs - 3.1 fiber = 12.1g carbs

I hope this helps. I'm glad I checked, because I usually buy the rutabagas, but I think I'm going to try and get some turnips now.

My son keeps telling me to think a new thought. And that is definitely true about vegetables I've never tried because my taste buds are so childish. Eew I don't like that when I've never even tried it.

On my list: cauliflower and turnips. Already found out that broccoli is not poison as my taste buds as previously told me.

I made turnip fries and I did NOT like them at all. Fried them in oil, blechk! They never did crisp up, got very dark and soggy. :-( What did I do wrong?

Maybe next time bake them?? I dunno. I don't really like turnips at all. They are bitter to me, taste funny.

And they do have carbs.... maybe not as much as a potato, but they do have carbs.

Tried rutabaga, which is similar, right? I found them on a buffet one night, boiled. They were ok. If a potato gets a "10" for me as far as taste goes, the rutabaga got a 6 and the turnips get a 3.
