Talking "SEXY" Nutritional supplements?

Hello....SORRY. "Sexy" doesn't really have anything to do with my question...I just put that word in the subject line to make sure this thread was read!!

I am in week 3 of following the Atkins Induction plan. I have only been taking my usual Centrum multi-vitamin and a calcium supplement.

Today I am feeling really weak and "blah." It is my TOM (which usually zaps my energy anyway) but I feel like my WOE is compounding the negative effects of my period.

What other supplement(s) should I be taking?

I have also had cramps in my legs at night. However it was about 9 days ago and only lasted a few nights....hasn't been a problem since.

I ventured into my neighborhood GNC store but was overwhelmed with all of the choices that I turned around and left.

I would appreciate any advice that you might be able to offer....

Thank you!

April

For leg cramps, most people here will tell you to take a potassium and/or magnesium supplement. The potassium also helps a little with energy level for me. My first gyn also told me that a lot of women can become anemic if their TOM is heavy for more than 2 days, and should add an iron supplement during that time.

Hope that helps. Feel better.

I agree completely with the potassium and magnesium supplement advice. Perhaps a B-complex for a few days around your TOM might help as well if you are normally feeling the blahs?

Good luck, it does pass.

I agree with them about the potassium. Three years ago, I was sick as a dog, thought I was having a heart attack, and ended up in ER. The diagnosis? Severe potassium defiency. Bad enough they had to IV it right away. Later it dawned on me that I had leg cramps coming and going. Please, please keep an eye on them and if they occur at all, see a dr. If they are cramping, it's usually not enough to just suplement. Hugs, Annie Pie

Extra potassium has helped my leg pain that seems to get worse at TOM (right now). I also up my iron because I tend to bleed heavier. It does get better though...the first three periods were the worst; now they are more "normal"

I believe Atkins cautions against supplementing with iron when following his plan, however, I'm not certain as I am not a follower. Just something you may want to check out since iron is something you don't want to get too much of.

Default Thanks.

ZONECOACH....You are right. After reading your thread, I just referred to the "Induction Phase" chapter of my Atkins book and it states:

"A broad multiple vitamin and mineral supplement that contains considerably more than the reccommended daily intake (RDI) of B complex and Vitamin C and that also contains at least 30 other different nutrients (and no iron). Ideally chromium picolinate or polynicotinate (between 200 and 600 mcg) should be included."

Thanks. I will just purchase the Potassium supplements.
