Happy Food! Wisdom from Thich Nhat Hahn
I was reading a book last night by the Buddhist teacher and author Thich Nhat Hahn, called "Anger". The book talks alot about food and its relation to our anger. I thought I would share with everyone some ideas from him on reducing the anger in our bodies from food. I know I plan on using some of his ideas and see how they work.
He says that food carries energy in itself and our body absorbs that energy. When foods are raised in less than humane conditions and grown in less than humane/ideal conditions the food will contain those poisons and when we eat them, they become part of our body. Some of the examples he used were with the chickens who raised in cages at the mass production plants and never allowed outside to frolick or whatever it is chickens do. The chickens become angry and aggressive, attacking the other birds around them as a result. The plants operators then cut the chickens beak off so they wont fight. The eggs and meat that come from this kind of chicken is going to carry that bad energy to the person that consumes it.
I guess I never really thought about it before, but it does make sense to me that this is true. I dont know about you guys but I am eating about 1 - 2 dozen eggs a week right now and a ton of meat. I am going to start with buying the happy eggs at the store and see what happens. I guess I feel kind of responsible for the beakless chickens since I consume roughly 8 dozen eggs a month now.
The author understands how expensive the change to organic happy food can be, but he offers another suggestion for eating that I liked. This goes beyond the politics of meat and animal farming.
He said that we must learn to enjoy our food and savor each bite. Chew each bite 50 times in your mouth, tasting the food fully. Letting it turn to liquid in your mouth. He says you will likely absorb more nutrients by doing this as well. When you do this, according to the author, you will eat less.
Ok maybe this was all sounds a little far fetched but it felt right to me. Anyone else have insight into this? Anyone else believe in Happy Food?
