I returned from China in July and gradually have been doing less and less exercise, but am realizing I need to get back into it as I felt so much more energy and power.

In China, for the last 10 weeks I was there, I worked out in a gym twice a day 5 times a week and once a day the other two days of the week.

I did 60 minutes on a treadmill, intermittent run/walk every other day...

I worked out with machine weights every other day for an hour to an hour and a half.

I rode stationary bikes every other day.

I used the elyptical machine every day from 10 minutes to 45 minutes.

Besides the gym, I was walking on average about 2 hours a day.

Now, it is dwindling down to nothing.

I still stay active, but workouts are so much better and I need to get back into it... Maybe posting here will encourage me. I'm about an hour and 30 minutes from Lake Charles. Where'd you move from?

Ron

I moved from West Virginia. I blew my diet/workout this week when we went to New Orleans to pick up a friend at the airport. I wasnt planning on eating gumbo but when that was all they were serving at the airport (this was at 7pm) and I was so shakey, I figured I better eat before I have a low blood sugar melt down. Today, we take our friend back to the airport and I start my diet and exercise plan today. Hope you had a nice thanksgiving!

If I moved from here, West Virginia is one place I'd consider, as I find it beautiful there...

You mentioned low blood sugar. Really? Is there a condition going on there, such as pre-diabetic? I hope I'm misinterpreting that... I would not wish diabetes on anyone. I've been battling it for over 11 years now and it was uphill for a long time....

I had a great Thanksgiving and I'm tryng to get on an exercise plan this week...

Hi,

How is your workout going along with your diet?

Hi,

Wow, you certainly did alot of exercise! How did you manage to fit it into your day . You must have felt great... your energy must have been through the roof.

You say you aren't doing that exercise anymore... can I just ask, have you seen any difference in your weight/weightloss since not doing so much working out?

Kay,

I have gained about 7 pounds over the last 2 1/2 months, but still wear my belt in the same notch. Also, even if I'm not exercising regularly, I have been keeping very active. I attribute my energy level to the way I eat.

I've been a reactive hypoglycemic since my daughter was born 17 yrs ago. At least that's when I was diagnosed. I just had my blood work done and it shows my fasting blood sugar is 83. I think that's a little low but the dr says it's fine. All I know is I hate low blood sugar.
West Virginia is beautiful but I'm glad I got out of that town. It's true, if you're not related, you're not invited. I lived there for 12 years and now, I live in a better place, Louisiana!

Hypoglycemia is a reading under 70. If you feel like it is a hypo and the number is above 70, it is a "false hypo", which is an indication that your body might not be used to that lower number and that your blood sugar has been averaging a bit higher.

In my experience with diabetes. If I'm used to averaging 95 and all of a sudden, it drops to 80, I feel like I'm having a hypo, but if I keep it around 80 for a couple of days, I'm fine.

Usually a drop of about 15 points will give that feeling if it drops to a number you have not experienced for a while.

Insulin is the most powerful hormone in our bodies. Too much insulin secretion and your metabolism will slow down. The higher your blood sugar average, the more insulin our bodies will produce to get the number normal. A normal range is 70-120, but itdeally it probably should be 80-110, but there are studies that say it should be 70-85.

When we have a lot of insulin production, insulin will cause your body to store fat. So, if trying to lose weight, if you are diabetic or not, it is good to know that if you keep your blood sugar levels around 80, you're going to lose weight more easily then if you keep your blood sugar levels around 100.

Good luck on the diet!

Whoa, that's good information to know. When I first had my blood sugar tested, (5 hr gloucose tolerance test) they stopped the test at the third hour becuase my sugar dropped to 37 and didn't rebound quick enough to show a normal reading. At that time, I remember them asking me if I could read the book I was holding. I couldn't. I felt drunk and had slurred speech. Bummer for me. Low blood sugar is horrible to go through on top of getting older and well, peri menopause makes makes hormone stability problematic. Now, if I could put my mind over my fatty matter, I will be successful losing some of this weight. Have a happy day!

Wow, 37 is bad! It is totally not normal at any point after a GTT or at any time after meals or after fasting, etc... Hypoglycemia is probably more problematic than what most diabetics suffer with high blood sugars. Hypoglycemia can also be a sign of pre-diabetes, which in itself is a diabetic condition. If you can control blood sugars at a pre-diabetic level, you'll save yourself a whole bunch of complications later.

Which do you eat more of, protein or carbohydrates?

In percentages of total calories consumed daily, do you know what percentage are carbs? proteins? fats? It may feel bothersome to know this, but it is also very important to know and understand nutritional intake and balance....

Hi there YoCheerioh!

You posted this reply to me:

Quote:
If your symptoms become worse, are gaining weight for unkown reasons and you are unable to function normally, talk to your dr about bio-identical hormones. I've been on them for one cycle now and feel so much better. I'm told that once I am hormonally stablized, I should be able to drop the weight. My peri-menopause started early. I think I was 41 or so. I noticed a change in my mind and body. I started gaining weight and had loads of fuzzy thinking. My periods were two weeks long, (but I didn't make the connection). I blamed every symptom on low blood sugar. (I'm a reactive hypoglycemic) so when my dr said it was peri-menopause, I didn't believe him. I went for a few more years dealing with it until the anxiety/panic attacks, dizziness and all the other symptoms became unbearable. I finally went on birth control for the hormones. It made me gain 20 lbs! I traded in one set of symptons for another. Yuck. After a year on that, I went to a compounding Pharmacy and talked to a hormone specialist. He made hormone cream specifically for me and I'm doing so much better. If you ever have a question, please ask. I would hate to see another woman suffer as I did. Good luck to you and let me know how things are going.

Thanks a million times for the information and offers of more information on bio-identical hormones, should I need it.

I really hope that things do NOT get worse: the dizziness is not as bad as a few weeks ago, when it lasted well into the afternoon and I had to cancel a teaching appointment that I had promised to keep earlier the very same day. At the moment it is only slightly bothersome and wears off by about 9-10am completely. My period came sooner than normal, but, thankfully, was short as well, so I can live with that, too.

I am hoping that my LC diet, along with my main supplements (Vitamin D3, magnesium, CoQ10, occasional zinc and selenium, plus Wobenzym, which contains proteolytic enzymes) will help keep me stable for the next few years. I have just ordered some probiotics and digestive enzymes to try out, too. I'll be curious to see what effect they have - or don't have!!!

It is very good to know that there is somebody out there who I can consult if needs be. I read a post on another forum about someone going through horrific perimenopause symptoms at age 42 and felt quite relieved that I have been spared this - so far... It did sound as if some vitamin/mineral deficiencies could have been involved in her problems, too, so I shall carry on taking my supplements and eating well. I also try to exercise twice a week although the dizziness has stopped me from time to time lately.

Take care and many many thanks for your kind message,

amanda

Hi Amanda,
Good hearing from you. Today is day one on low carb and am already in ketosis (light pink). Hopefully, tomorrow there will be no headaches and/or lethargy and this will be easy for me. I'm going to try to take a walk early in the morning since anytime after 10 a.m. is too hot here in Louisiana. Hope to chat again soon. Hugs, Donna

Hi Donna,

Good luck with low carb! Keep up the fat intake and that should take care of the energy problem - all you have to do is to keep your own signature in mind - I just love that, makes me chuckle every time I see it!

Today is day 3 on low carb. I'm still in ketosis but woke up with a slight groggy headache. Had a glass of water and now 2 cups of coffee. After that, more water and scrambled egg with spinach, tomato, and cheese for breakfast. I still haven't started exercising. Maybe later today.
