Default Dr. Davis & magnesium

Hi. Dennis here. I was reading Dr. William Davis' open letter to Tom Hanks

http://www.wheatbellyblog.com/2013/...nt-be-diabetic/

Anyway he recomends Mag. malate 1200 mg twice daily I think. Here are his words -- "I advocate magnesium malate, 1200 mg, twice per day."

I think he's saying taking 1200 two times a day not 1200mg divided into two.

I've been taking 1000mg once daily but 2400 mg sounds like a lot -- do any of you routinely take that much?

Also he recommends 6000 units of Vit. D3. I assume he means the IU number when he says units. Anyone following his recommendations?

I don't take the maleate form, but glycinate and citrate forms, 800mg total.
No idea if this is doing me any good at all...magnesium is the most confusing supplement in the store. Years ago, Dr Eades had a post on the various forms.
On firmer ground with VitD3... I take 5,000 in summer, and 10,000IU in winter. But it is tested twice a year, and know this keeps levels between 50-80.

*****

July 4th special at Direct Labs, HbA1c for $29, basic lipid panel $19.
VitD was last month's special (sorry) $39.

I take 600mg per day of magnesium in a combination of glycinate and citrate. Taking this became immediately apparent as my leg and foot cramping during workouts went away. It's also supposed to mitigate or help regulate blood pressure, but I have no personal experience with that, or in other words, there may be a correlation, but there's also other things at work as well. Magnesium is one of the electrolytes today in which people are typically deficient due to changes in soil health and other factors. Like Janet, I take magnesium (chelated or citrate) daily along with D3; although, I lighten up a bit in the warmer months with the D3 when I'm getting maximum sun exposure.

The Source Naturals Magnesium Malate tablets contain, in three tablets:

Magnesium malate, 425 mg.
Malic acid as magnesium malate and malic acid, 2.5 g.

I take 2 tablets in the early A. M., and 2 at noon.

---

In the evening, I take a chelated magnesium: elemental glycinate and lysinate, 800 mg. I may switch brands on this one.

I take 600 mg of magnesium glycinate from Kirkman Labs, divided into 3 doses which is 6 capsultes daily. I use glycinate because it does not act as a laxative, which can be a problem with some other forms of magnesium.

So I guess it comes down to how much elemental magnesium is in the product. 2400 mg of magnesium oxide would be excessive, but magnesium malate, not so much.

Magnesium malate is 6.5 percent magnesium. So 2400 mg of pure magnesium malate gives 156 mg of magnesium. There's so much malate in there that you almost have to wonder if there might be a therapeutic effect of the malate itself, and not just the magnesium.

I take one to two grams of Vital Nutrients Triple mag
60%oxide 30% malate 10% glycinate

If I start to have loose stools I cut back. I do take it for this reason mostly.

I have a problem with small doses of magnesium causing diarrhea. I got some glycinate as it's not supposed to be as bad. But I'm taking just 100mg (1/4 of dose according to bottle) & after just a few days I'm having cramps, gas, & extra bowel movements. No diarrhea yet. I'm wondering if I continue to take it, will my gut get used to it? Should I continue a little longer or give it up?

I'm also wondering if topical magnesium or Epsom salts baths really do any good. I've not seen any more "proof" than anecdotes.

On the other hand, maybe I don't need any more magnesium than what I'm getting in my diet.

Bonnie, I would try it a bit longer. Most people need to start low and can add more magnesium over time. The chelated varieties (ending in -ate) cause fewer gut issues, Mg oxide is the worst (unless you are constipated and need it). Check your bottle to see if there are more varieties than glycinate in there.

Once when I had two broken toes, an old-timer said I needed to soak my feet in Epsom salts. Since I could not conceive how it could possibly work, I didn't try it for two weeks and miraculously the inflammation and pain were gone in an hour. Ever since I love to soak to relieve muscle pain & cramps after long hikes or days on my feet on concrete floors. It also clears up my dermatitis and plumps up my skin.

The magnesium I got is all glycinate. I spent a lot of time at the store reading the labels!

I'll keep trying if for a bit longer. I'll also try the baths once the bathroom is finished - should be done by the end of the month. Then I'll not only have a tub to soak in, but a flush toilet!!!!!!! We're moving into the 21st century!

I just read Dr. Davis' new book, "Undoctored," and he recommends 400-500mg of Magnesium Citrate.

I use chelated magnesium 3x, plus magnesium malate 2x/day at 200 and 1,000 mg respectively.

I also use magnesium oil daily on most of my body but especially on my legs and feet.
