"The only method that is likely to lead to a large and permanent weight loss is bariatric surgery."

Conflict of interest?

The Bariatric diet:

Avoid whole milk. Eat nutrient dense foods (whole fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs). Plan your meals ahead of time.
In general, you'll want to choose foods that are high to moderate in protein, low in carbohydrates and moderate in good fats. A diet consisting of protein, vegetables, a limited amount of grains, and very little, if any, refined sugars should be followed for the rest of your life.
-- Obesity Coverage

Sounds vaguely familiar to low-carb, except they want everything absolutely fat-free in the beginning. One of their recommended reads is "Grain Brain" which I thought appropriate.

In addition, people can gain all the weight back even after bariatric surgery. Some solution!

Re: bariatric surgery. I recently read about a man who had his stomach removed. Not to lose weight, but because he had the gene for a particularly nasty stomach cancer. He had his stomach removed protectively, just as some women have had their breasts removed.

The way he has to eat sounded very difficult, but it also seemed that there would be no way to cheat, as I've heard of people doing with bariatric surgery.
