Default GTF Chromium Question

Can GTF Chromium be purchased in powder form in bulk? If so, where? what's it called?

There is a doctor giving 1500 mcg three times a day to diabetic patients and their diabetes reversed.

So my diabetic cousin wants to try it but can't find GTF chromium at a reasonable price for how much she'll have to be taking, $32/10 days.

There's chromium picolinate here: http://www.puritan.com/puritans-pri...02570?scid=6831

If taken at the dose I've seen recommended, the current sale is a 30 day supply for $11.98.

It's not chromium picolinate that's needed. But thanks anyway.

My type 2 diabetes reversed itself/went away, now docs say I do not need to list it on charts, by not eating more than 30- 50 net carbs a day.

According to further research, THIS (chromium polyniconitate) is the form known as GTF Chromium: http://www.puritan.com/puritans-pri...ast-free-000876

$15.98 for 600 200mcg tablets. Maximum dose recommended by the Atkins Vita-Nutrient Solution, 600 to 1000 mcg. At the maximum dose this is a 120 day supply. But the book also stated that Dr. Atkins used to prescribe both together.

This information at Douglas Labs identifies the chromium polyniconitate at the correct formula (second column under heading Formula):

I use Natural Factors GTF chromium chelate; it's available in 500 mcg tablets. It's fairly inexpensive .. maybe $7 or $8 US, definitely less than $10 for 90 tabs. She'd need to take 9 tabs per day, so less than $10 for 10 days. Note - the "hvp chelate" is made from rice protein, not wheat or soy. It does not contain the hexavalent "picolinate" form of the mineral, which some reports suggest may be toxic.

$32 is a rip off

I found 1,000 mcg chromium on swaonsonvitamins.com. I found it improved my blood sugar a little. I was taking it 3x a day.

Thank you all.

Doreen,
Natural Factors GTF Chromium is the brand I take and the brand I had recommended to my diabetic cousin months ago. I see Vitacost has it cheaper now.

Since she has diabetes and has had it for years she will have to be on the GTF protocol for years as well. She was looking for something cheaper over the long haul.

I think the Natural Factors GTF is an excellent product as well.

I will recommend she purchase a 30 day supply and try it out. $15/ month seems very reasonable to me.

Is there much difference between GTF Chromium and chromium picolinate. I have been taking the latter for a week now. It -was- specified that it reduces blood sugar. Is the former more effective at it?

Yes, GTF Chromium (Glucose Tolerance Factor) is much more effective for blood sugar control than chromium picolinate. IMO, chromium picolinate is NOT effective and may damage DNA and the liver with long-term use.

Zuliekaa,

Has your cousin taken what seems to be a high dose and seen BG improvement from it?

When starting LC in 2011 I read in one of the Atkins books that 1,000 mcg of chromium picolinate would help with weight loss. Think I took it until sometime in 2014 then stopped in an effort to reduce multiple supplements. About that time...or after? my BG was rising, which I have continually blamed on Physiological Insulin Resistance. It got better with intermittent fasting, but not consistently low. Reading something about six weeks ago, realized what I had dropped and after reading this thread, purchased the Natural Factors GTF version. Multi has 120 mcg picolinate and I take one 500 mcg GFT with it.
I don't want to get too excited but both fasting and PP BG has been much improved in the past few weeks. Could kick myself for not keeping better track of which supplements added and subtracted and when (lesson write everything down with dates even for supplements or change in multi).

Could further BG lower with two tablets? Does time of day matter?
Have others noticed continued improvement using GTF? Studies do not seem to bear out BG improvements, but this would seem a big coincidence.

My cousins BG has much improved. After all this time, it's now in the normal range most days . She is taking 2000 mcg (2 mg?) three times/day. She takes 4 tablets of 500 mcg upon arising, mid day, and just before bed.

Wow, shouldn't worry then about adding one more tablet for a daily total of 1,000 of the gtf. happy to know that your cousin is doing better. I was trying to understand all that complicated information at the Linus Pauling Institute page on chromium and came away with most studies showed no improvement, and more than a 1,000 might be damaging. But then also read about many individuals who have had improvements and take it long term, esp the gtf version. Many thanks for your help!
