Post Article poo-poos low-carb, lists carb "myths"

Want to try LeBron James' Paleo diet? 3 things we get wrong about carbs

While overloading on pasta, bread and potatoes can contribute to weight gain and diet-related diseases, such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes, going to the opposite extreme by slashing carbohydrate and increasing protein intake (especially fatty meats) isn’t the answer, especially if long-term weight loss or optimal performance at work or in sports are your goals.

I didn't read this because I refuse to give hits to click-bait listicles, but there's a special place in hell for listicle "authors." 'Nuff said.

Well I like lists, as it lets me skim the main points of an article, then I can decide if I want to read the details.

What I hate are those annoying click-through galleries, where you have to click to see the next point, and wait each time for a gazillion ads to load.

Anyway, here are the "myths" they cite:

Quote:
1. To lose weight, I need to cut carbohydrates.
2. I don't need carbohydrates.
3. Carbohydrate-rich foods aren’t healthy.

This quote is the reason why I didnt start low carbing til I was nearly 40yo! I wasted all of my younger years, being fat, painful joints, tired all the time, eczema, IBS, insulin resistant and desperately miserable. I often wonder how worse I would have become if I'd not started low carbing - 10 years on??????? - How many others are being discouraged by this shocking nonsense ????

THESE ARE NOT MYTHS, THEY ARE TRUE

The worst part is that the author is a NUTRITIONIST. If the nutrition experts are this clueless, what hope do people have? Sad, really.

What in the heck is a click-bait listicle?? I tried to google it, but I'm stumped!

How do you know it is a click-bait listicle, whatever that is. Is there a clue in the URL? It say Today. com--is that a bad site? I guess I thought it meant the site for the "Today" show?? Is that show still on anyways??

Okay, well since the mod didn't want to click it, I didn't click on it either. Just trying to understand how she knew it was something devious....

I assume a click-bait is a way for them to generate more clicks for a certain website, in order to garner more, more, what? Hits on the site? And what does that do? Okay, enough with my OT questions!

They ever so slightly misrepresented with words what the study they cited actually said.

That percentage was among "healthy adults." And had to do with BMI. It doesn't say how long they were a healthy weight and the % of fat they ingested. Nor calorie intake. Or whether or not they were miserable human beings starving to death.

BS. The Today show is just another talk show. They want to please their advertisers and get higher ratings. Truth is probably not a priority.

That's a funny phrase, isn't it! My guess is that it's stuff that pops up on your screen with "information" like:

--TEN foods you should NEVER EAT!!!!
--The FIVE Things that will kill you instantly!
--Celebrities who have secretly lost more than 200 lbs!

You know. Like that.

As for the OP, I did read the article. The photo of Lebron is great. Very attractive. If I thought I could look like that (female version) I'd run for the Paleo menu in a NY Minute.

Trouble with the category "carbohydrates" is that in the SAD, it generally doesn't mean "healthy whole grains" and air-popped popcorn. It means french fries, pizza, pop tarts, and 95% sugar breakfast cereal.

And that's only the start of the "healthy sounding" half-truths in this article. Too bad for intelligent people who could otherwise hear the low-carb health message.

The reason click-bait headlines are ubiquitous is that they work. People are overwhelmed by the deluge of information available online, so publishers have to cut through the clutter to get people to even go to their articles.

I've had to title my upcoming blog entries as click-bait:
  • Is your olive oil faking it?
  • The one food that will make your joints thank you
  • What you're missing when you're missing meat
  • The other "Special K" you need to know about

"Listicles" is a new, fad word. It's supposed to mean a short list with a very brief explanation of each list item.

Oh, you'd be surprised!

I know I've told this story before, but when I had a high FBG, my doctor sent me to a nutritionist.

The nutritionist, who was very, very thin but was possibly the unhealthiest-looking person I've seen still able to stand up - pale, shaking (but maybe she had some issue such as Parkinson's? So I can't and won't judge that), trembly voice, patches of hair loss - presented me with a photocopied, yes, photocopied, sideways - not printed, copy of a "healthy 1200 calorie a day diet."

First she stated that the 1200 might be too much for me. Yes, really. But that the basics should be good.

Then when I told her I was gluten-free, she looked at me blankly for a minute, then said, "Well, that's going to be hard, because we're a wheat-based society."

She had no ideas at all on any alterations to the "diet." None. Zero. I asked her questions and she stood and blinked at me and told me she just didn't have any other options for me.

Yes, this woman gets paid to do this. To hand people photocopies (this was only a few years ago, for heaven's sake! It wasn't the 70s) of a diet that includes "healthy" wheat bread, "healthy" crackers and so on with EVERY, and I mean every single meal PLUS snack per day.

I'm sure there must be some good nutritionists out there. But I mean really.
