Wine seems to work well with type 1s taking NPH to cover DP. If the timing is off, one can wake up in the middle of the night hypoglycemic with NPH.

I take Metformin as well. I tried drinking a glass of wine after hearing that it helps with BS control and I just felt awful.

How often and how much vinegar were you taking a day?

Wine doesn't help blood sugar control, it helps suppress or delay Dawn Phenomenon which results from the liver releasing sugar at around 4:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.

About 3 shots of rotgut scotch will typically drop down my
BG 20-30 points-not always a good thing.I stop by a local
bar after work on Friday, shoot a little pool and dance with my wife. This is just an observed effect-I don't do it for BG control.

I used to know a diabetic bartender who would "party" once a week - on Fridays. This was before I was diagnosed but that stuck with me.

For some reason I have the perception that alcohol (more than a glass or two of wine) will impact the triglyceride content of the blood negatively but I don't know why I think that. Does anyone know if it is okay for me to go out and get smashed every now and then?... I am not looking to die of a myocardial infarction or stoke... Bernstein says something about a drink a day being okay as I recall. What about 6 as long as I have a designated driver? I don't want my triglycerides to go up though.

I took 1-2 tablespoons before each meal (actually each meal at home) and at bedtime.

If I drink more than a couple of drinks I invariably end up ordering an appetizer, then it's all over.

In 30 years of living with diabetes, I've been smashed a few times.

Isn't controlling the dawn phenomenon controlling blood sugar?

Indirectly, yes. But its action is not working on the pancreas, but the liver. Red wine contains resteverol which has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity. If you are eating a VLC diet and depending mainly on protein for glucose, it can cause hypoglycemia if you are an insulin user.

My preference for blood sugar control is insulin.

And yet you are advising people to drink wine for control of dawn phenomenon. Drinking diabetics don't make a whole lot of sense to me.
