Default Ketosis problems

I'm wondering why I'm not going into ketosis. In the past, I'd always go into ketosis right away. Here lately it's not working. When I started doing low carb June 1st, I had just got done doing 5 days of the Fat Loss 4 Idiots diet. Did that affect my ability to get into ketosis? Mind after that 5 days on Fat Loss 4 Idiots, I took a 3 day break and ate whatever I wanted then started on low carb. So anyway my question is, did dieting previously cause ketosis difficulty? Should I keep on keeping on and stay on track with low carb, or should I stop, eat whatever I want and carb up then start back doing low carb?

Hi Christy,

First of all.. you CAN be in ketosis without it showing on the sticks.

I would not go back to eating whatever you wanted.. I think our bodies like (mostly) to see some consistency so they can get used to fueling the body with the new way of eating.

GOOD LUCK!!

Mike

Thanks for the reply. I haven't tested ketosis on the sticks, but I'm not having my ketosis symptoms like bad breath, and I can just tell my body hasn't reached the state yet.

Sorry - it's not clear from your inital post...how many days have you been doing low carb (and how many grams of carbs are you eating per day)? It can take several days for the transition into ketosis to happen.

For what it's worth, I never had any of the "symptoms" like the bad breath....so you may very well be in it and not even know.

But is it possible to get into ketosis if you've been dieting off and on for a while? Is it possible to get into ketosis after a carb cheat?

Sure Kristy. It seems the first transition or two if you're carbs are moderate can be slow, but once keto adapted most people can move in and out of ketosis based on carb intake. I intermittent fast and if I over do carbs, by the middle of the next fast, I am already back in ketosis. I'm guessing, but in my case the longer I spend in deeper ketosis, say under 20g per day, the easier it is to get back after a cheat or something.

So should I give it another week to see if ketosis kicks in? I carbed last night--does a week at the most sound like a reasonable amount of time for ketosis to kick in?

A week is more than reasonable. I had 7 up and saltines Sun and was back in by today. I have shown deep ketosis with keto breath etc or not a sign in the world It really varies. I have also sworn by the signs I was in ketosis and not had it register. My advice is to follow the lc plan and not worry about it

For some reason this time around, despite losing weight, I have not had the bad breath. I have felt an upsurge in energy since I started low carbing it though.

I threw the sticks out as it seemed pointless to pee on them everyday but see no color change, even though i was losing weight.

So it is possible to get back into ketosis 1) after a carb cheat 2) after you've been low carbing for awhile?

Sure it is! No worries. It is definitely not a one shot deal
