Default Chocolate Bars!

I started cutting out carbs and sugar last week, not so much to lose weight but to control severe acid reflux. Meanwhile I've been eating a LOT of the low carb/no sugar chocolate bars from the drugstore. They tase great.

Is this bad? I've read that Manitol is safe. I eat at least one chocolate bar a day and had three last night. It can't be good.

Thumbs down

A known staller - sugar alcohols - Malitol, Sorbitol, etc...

I would not eat them so much - - I limit myself to 1 piece a day and am doing great. Also, Malitol can have a laxative and/or gas affect on some so I'd be careful.

I would take it very easy on the chocolate bars/SF Candies.....If you havent experienced the side effects of the sugar alcohols, let me tell you, its not pretty.....I've given them up completely!

I also do good with a piece or 2 a day. When I chump on a whole bar I stall... but some days it's worth it just to indulge

Stall? Does that mean plateau and stop losing weight?

These aren't 50/50 bars.. they are no sugar/low carb bars. Pure Delite I think is the brand I've been eating.

Thanks for the reply baycity...all I ever see are the 50/50 chocolate bars...they are sugar free, they are by the diabetic food. I will have to look for the pure dee light chocolates...but I think I'll wait till after induction.

Bay city,

At 115 lbs it sure doesn't look like you're doing this to lose weight anyway ( I think you said that in your post also),so stalling probably isn't an issue for you. If you really like chocolate, one of the lc chocolate bars should be a problem, especially if the sugar alchohols don't bother you. But 3 might be overdoing it ! They don't bother me either, but I only have them for treats once in a while and often only 1/2 a bar at a time to control the calories. I have to admint, cutting out sugar really help me with my heartburn which I had almost every day and bad enough to need medication.. had a daily Pepsid AC habit. All gone !!!

Manucpa,

Thanks for the post. I am fortunate that weight is not an issue, but my acid reflux has been consuming me for a year. I've cut out carbs and sugar for a week and I'm actually feeling better... just over the last 2 days. I am very happy and relieved... hopefully this will last.

I'm not sure what sugar alcohols do... I had 2 low carb/no sugar bars last night! I just love chocolate. Something is making me constipated though (sorry for too-much-information)... probably the lack of fiber and all the candy bars.

Keep eating Maritol and constipation will not be your problem. Making it to the bathroom on time will be......

I haven't had any side affects from maltitol... I'd actually prefer if it did affect me that way... then I wouldn't have to take those darn husks!

The sugar free chocolate I get are Cavalier Belgium chocolate bars. I found them in a local pharmacy. They have them in dark and milk chocolate, then flavours like mocha and hazelnut cream. Yum!

Crimson,

Those Cavalier chocolate bars are grand aren't they!

In the Shoppers Drug Mart in Pacific Centre they have the Ross Chocolate Bars. 1 or 2 carbs for the whole bar.... plus different kinds like Crunchy, Almond, Dark and Milk. They are in the back by the pharmacy.
