My opinion: Calories matter. After losing about 40 lbs on LC, I low-carbed for about a year staying at one weight (~255 +/-5), not paying attention to calories. I finally tired of the wait (pun intended) and started counting calories, too.
I must say the dietary change was not the only alteration to my lifestyle: I began walking one or two miles 4x per week (normally, I'm rather sedentary). Combine the caloric restriction (not starvation) with the walking and the results have been drastic: In ten weeks I've lost 29 pounds. Now at 230, I've decided to go below my original target weight of 210 and shoot for 190.
Staying true to a L/C lifestyle, I've decided food is simply a requirement for life, not life itself. My new motto is four simple words: Eat less, walk more.
