Coconut oil is used in soapmaking, so check out online suppliers of soapmaking oils and you will likely find coconut oil cheaper than what has been mentioned. I got a 5gallon bucket from Kohl's, I think it was something like $35. But, it is the stuff used to pop theater popcorn, which means it has a slight butter flaover (rom butyrate) and yellow color from carotene (actually a good thing). The stuff makes AWESOME lc chocolate. But even making lots of soap and eating and cooking with the stuff, I don't know WHEN I'm going to get to the bottom of that 5gallon bucket!

Where did you get 5 gallon of coconut oil. I mean the store name or online store. I bought 1 qt and it was $30 or $32.

They have extra virgin organic coconut oil and olive oil if you look at their price list .

Coconut Oil - Extra Virgin Organic ($3.75 per pound), 7 lb bottle, $26.25
Olive Oil - Extra Virgin Organic ($2.52 per pound), 7 lb bottle, $17.67

Shopping Cart Subtotal: $43.92

But shipping adds a fatty chunk to the total. Shipping to my zipcode was $17.38

Grand Total: $61.30

Default Good for skin

I tried it for a while, summer of '03 but my blood lipids went up and I quit. I have been using it on my skin after a shower while still wet, it's great and smells yummy!! I read in The Good Fat Cookbook that the good stuff soaks into the skin and is absorbed and metabolized.

Da Rosa, Columbus is where I've bought some of my soaping oils as well. I recommend them for their reasonable prices.

Still making chocolate like crazy. Have been using almond extract, mint extract, and peanut butter extract (and/or chunky peanut butter) for some variety. Wife is addicted, and I'm her hero when I whip out a batch.

Default Use it for cooking

Howdy:

I use unrefined, expeller pressed, coconut oil (CO) for cooking now, ever since learning that some oils, when heated, produce way more bad Trans Fats ... however; apparently, CO does not alter one bit when heated, and it's also supposed to be really good for us, being a med. chain fat .

Here's a great link for info on CO properties etc.

http://www.coconutresearchcenter.org/

And one of the "articles" (under left menu on the web page)

http://www.coconutresearchcenter.org/article10065.htm

I haven't gained anything, and have continued to lose weight, since using CO. I even have it with my steel cut oats and walnuts in the morning.

I have heard 1tbsp to 3 tbsp per day, but I'm using about 1/2 tbsp in my oats, and then just about a tsp for cooking.

I still use olive oil, and non GMO canola oil, but for dressing foods or for very low heat cooking and salad dressing.

Cheers

Paula
