it's a different way of thinking about protein with a keto diet - adding extra protein for gloconeogenesis along with the regular protein for rebuilding.

I'll look into bumping up my protein intake. I know that the Dukan diet encourages more protein over fat. I'm not trying to build, however, just wanting to lose fat.

I'm so curious about going into ketosis and I've read it's only possible by having 80% of your diet from fat; 10% from protein; 10% from carb.

Using %'s to describe a ketogenic diet isn't very accurate. Usually anything under 50g of carb is ketogenic. If you eat a whole lot or very few calories, the %'s could take you far over or far under 50g of carbs.

Protein only affects ketosis insofar as consuming too much, like more than 2g per kilo of ideal body weight, some will be turned into glucose. That would be like more than 112g of protein for you.

Insufficient protein results in the body breaking down your muscles, including your heart muscle, in order to keep the brain functioning. I have no idea how long that takes or how low you have to be... and I don't care to find out through self-experimentation.

I was lowcarb for 7-8 of those years.

I mus admit I don't have to worry about what i eat nearly so much now that i eat fish/poultry.....

but, here are some menu ideas- best of luck!

breakfasts:
1. tvp oatmeal
http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/br.../tvpoatmeal.htm
2. celery with peanut or almond butter
3. tofu scramble
4. smoothies made with tofu, almond or coconut milk, truvia, ice, and unsweetened cocoa podwer- optional nut butter
5. make a hot cereal with ground flaxmeal and maybe pumkpin and cinnamon
6. muffins made with almond four- just need an egg sub- maybe mashed tofu?

lunch and dinner:
sounds like you have a good start.....i would focus on soups, stews, salads, roasted vegetable and tofu/ seitan kabobs

I would encourage you to look at /south beach instead of ketogenic- it's much more veg friendly and allows beans even in stage 1

Excellent suggestions and very do-able. I haven't thought of pumpkin or almond flour (I hear coconut flour is an option too). Thank you! I'll into the South Beach Diet. Sounds like a winner!

If you are interested in South Beach, I've got the phase I food list and meal plan guide on the first page of my journal.
Just click my journal button and go to page 1.

I think you're right on track with your protein amount.

The RDA is 0.8 gram protein per kilo of body weight so you're right in the ballpark at 50. I keep mine to about 50 a day as well, my RDA is just a little lower than yours.

I'm not vegan but I don't eat meat, either. I get protein from nonfat dairy, egg whites, veggies, and nuts. I just got turned on to Quorn and will add it intermittently to my diet as well, but where I live it's pretty expensive.

What's your daily calorie number like?
