My wife was close to Dr. Atkins and they were writing a book together when he died. At one point he confided in her that people on his diet do well for 6-8 months, but then they stop losing weight. He thought they just lose interest, but my wife, who is the author of "Lights Out: Sleep, Sugar and Survival" and "Sex, Lies and Menopause," explained her research into seasonal eating.
I can tell you from snippets I picked up on my wife's end of phone calls that Dr. Atkins was, to the end, 100% authentic about his work. His pioneering efforts paved the way for many others like Schwarzbein (my wife wrote a book with her, too, but what a story), the Eades, Barry Sears, South Beach and on and on. The man was a good soul, kind and generous with his time, but never got the credit her deserved.
I never met Dr. Atkins, but my wife was on his radio show many times, and it was clear they had great (professional) affection for each other. He had no stomach for reading research, but relied on others, like my wife, to give him the rundown on what they discovered. I think what happened after his death with the commercialization of the Atkins name and rapid rise and fall is tragic. I hope he isn't watching.
