Question Too much Sodium?

I am following the induction rules of atkins for a 2 week jump start, then I plan of moving into the Zone or protein power - but for now I have a very strict diet -- I know the drill. I cant help but notice how much sodium is in my snack of salami and cream cheese, and cholesterol in my eggs? This worries me ....

any of you know some facts of help?

kristin

hi Kristin,

Your liver makes 80% of the cholesterol in your body, the other 20% will come from food. If you don't eat enough cholesterol, then your liver will just make more to take its place .. which is undesirable, because the extra liver-made cholesterol tends to be the "bad" LDL type. So enjoy those egg yolks!

As for sodium .. if you're following Atkins Induction, then you will likely be flushing out a fair bit of water with the ketosis-induced diuresis, and from drinking lots of water (you ARE drinking lots of water, right? ). Unless you have kidney disease or high blood pressure .. or your doctor has ordered you to restrict your salt intake, then I wouldn't worry about consuming a moderate amount of salty food. The key word is moderate ... you should be consuming mostly fresh, frozen or otherwise minimally processed protein foods, vegetables and salads.

Kristin, there's a complete listing of allowed foods, veggies, etc in Atkins New Diet Revolution. You can likely borrow a copy of the book from the library

Generally, leafy greens, salad greens and lettuces of all types, not just iceberg. In fact, most green non-starchy vegetables are suitably low in carbs .. broccoli, asparagus, spinach, green beans, celery, cabbage. Mushrooms, cauliflower, radish, green onions ... there are others. If you use our carb counter tool (from the quick links to the right), you can make up a list of the lowest carb veggies, and select your favourites from that. But, the book is still your best guide.
