Default Non-food things to prevent noshing....

What do you like to do to nourish yourself in non-food ways?

I find that if I am doing enough things to take good care of myself, then I don't reach for food to fill up places that need nurture, company, or a challenge....


Something I really like is to do things by hand, rather than using electric/electronic tools. Gardening, crochet, Gregg shorthand, & drawing are favorites.

How about you?

Ha! Gregg shorthand. I love that. I never learned Gregg but took a course in Speedwriting after college to land a good secretarial job. It is very similar to Gregg and carried me not only through my career but was a very useful skill throughout my life. I eventually got spoiled with keyboards, could type almost as fast as I could write, and my shorthand skills went by the wayside. It's still good for taking a quick note with pen and paper when I have to.

Now that I'm retired and my hands and eyes and time aren't so taxed by computer work, I can actually pick up a crocheting needle or a good book more often. Housework and gardening are on the list, too.

Another thing I'm thinking of doing to keep busy is learning another language and brushing up on the ones I already know. There is so much available online, it's a treasure worth tapping.

Barb, I'm not finding anything on a Speedwriting that is based on Gregg. Can you give me a link?

I agree about learning another language. I'm slowing learning ASL, the sign language which the deaf use.

Speedwriting is not Gregg, or based on Gregg. It's its own system based on the alphabet and a few punctuation marks but in numerous ways resembled Gregg.

Working/weeding in my flower beds, crocheting, sewing usually do the trick for me. I get so involved int hose things I don't even think about food. re-connect with your favorite hobbies and fav activities and that usually does the trick for people.

Yep, it looks about the same. I would have written "hand" as "h___" and "remember" as "rmb/" - the "and" sound was an underline and the "er" sound was a forward slash. I would have written one line under a word for "ing" and two lines for "ings." Also, we wrote "n" for in and "th" for this. Hence:

i c rmb/ th n spdri Sth___.
(I can remember this in Speedwriting shorthand.)

Delany, I like your activities.

I also like watching old, black-and-white films and tv shows, and listening to radio programs from the Golden Age of radio. I find them nice company for doing chores or crocheting.

My two favorite types of non-food nourishment are still health related. Walking while listening to low carb podcasts like Obesity Code and 2 KetoDudes, plus Politics, News and Interviews, etc for general info. I also read most anything, fiction and non, but those health books take up so much shelf space at the library, I have mostly non-fiction at home, currently Diabetes Code.

I am weird in that a favorite "non-food" thing I do to keep me out of the kitchen (when I shouldn't be there) is to read about cooking! I love searching through old cookbooks for recipes that appeal to me; or, more likely nowadays, read LC food bloggers blogs for ideas. I have always been like this - and have more than enough cookbooks to prove it! Oddly, reading about food & cooking ideas is almost as satisfying as cooking and eating the food read about - with much less clean up! And I always have a stash of likely recipes for when I do want to make a special dish. This wouldn't work for many (most?) people, I understand, but it works for me. A hot cup of tea and an interesting new cookbook, and I am a happy woman.
I also enjoy keeping my hands busy with knitting and gardening. And I am an avid reader of other books as well, not just cookbooks.

I nourish my brain by reading this forum and many of the articles and other websites members provide links to. Hours can pass without me eating a bite.
