I'm finding myself mindful that I have a 10K coming up in 4 months. That makes me want to put in a little extra effort each day. Soon I will start working out in the gym. But until then a few extra steps each day can only help. I've had good weather for it so far (Knock on wood).

Walking back on track after my one day hiatus. This always reassures me that walking is a true habit and that I am not slipping back into sloth and sedentary living. Yesterday I ordered a ridiculously expensive pair of mittens to keep my fingers warm as I walk this winter. Let's hope they're as good as the reviews say. It's been cold and will be getting colder and I want to have the right gear so I have no excuse to just stay inside.

Jean - I bought some nicer winter gloves recently, too. My old pairs didn't cut the mustard on those bone chilling winter days. Hopefully these will. While I was shopping for my winter gear I aw something quite strange. It resembled tire chains for your feet. It had rows of steel spikes on the bottom for grip on ice & snow, with straps to synch up over and around your boots or shoes. I thought about you and your NE winters when I saw them. We don't get that much ice around here so they stayed on the store shelf. They looked... interesting. I wonder how well they would work?

Not strange at all Ken. I have a pair of them, have for years. On icy days I wouldn't leave home without them. They work really well and make the difference between staying upright and falling.

I'd never seen them before. Probably not a big seller south of the Mason-Dixon line. I didn't check the price. Maybe I should buy a pair just in case. Bundled up warm I like walking in winter as much or more than I do in the summertime.

One thing to know about them is that while they are great on ice they make walking on pavement uncomfortable so in mixed surface conditions they are not ideal but for me ice usually wins out over pavement and I use them a lot in the winter especially since no matter how icy, the dog still needs to go out and one thing I don't want to happen is have the dog tug on the leash while walking on the ice and me plummeting to the ground. Who knew walking was so complicated an endeavor?

It will be a slushy walk today. A degree or two colder then those shoe snow chains might have come in handy.
