Thanks, Jay100 I am familiar with Dr. Vernon and glad she is weighing in on this! There is no way I would take any statins. I know there is nothing wrong with my Cholesterol numbers. Just would like to deal with a doctor who is enlightened.

Stan,

The problem with Kaiser is that they are a closed system. I don't know how much any individual physician can differ from their corporate standard.

My physician here in Longmont is very pro low-carb, but he is not in Kaiser.

Their web site says:

It's hard to make ongoing changes to your lifestyle when you don't see the rewards of weight loss, so while you're learning new skills and forging better health habits, you'll also use OPTIFAST® and other low-calorie meal replacements

I did Optifast in the 80's. You have 2 to 3 shakes daily totalling 20-30 carbs and something like 50-75 g. protein. It is PRICEY. I paid $1,200 back then to lose something like 20 lbs.

I'm trapped in Kaiser, too. The only docs who might be LC-friendly in my area cost a small fortune and also use therapies that haven't passed the gold standards of clinical trials, like homeopathy and flower essences, so I wouldn't see them, either.

But #1, just take the paper and don't fill it! 30% of all prescriptions are not filled.

I've been known to bring up the average on that score

Actually, 30% of prescriptions with refills are never refilled, to look up the actual stat. Only 10% are never filled at all.

50% of prescriptions are "used incorrectly", from the same source.

Well, I think there is more than enough good advice out here to keep up with a good LCHF WOE. I have pretty much made a hobby out of accumulating all the knowledge I can since November. I have to say my regard for many doctors and our national health bureaucracies has plummeted. Best advice I have had here is just to say no to anything the doctors tell you to do if you think something is not right. That is hard at first because of the way we were taught to avoid questioning the men in white.
