Default oven baked kale chips

I made an honest effort to find the baked kale chip thread to bump and had no luck I am sorry!

I just remember reading the thread and thinking "I have to try it" so I did!

I eat and grow a wide variety of greens and Kale is one of my top picks because it is so fun to cook with! It is next to escarole my favorite green I think!
I just never thought to toss it in olive oil and roast it until I saw the post
what a great find! I so wanted to express gratitude for the idea from both myself and my husband. we just ate a bowl and marveled at how wonderful they are and why on earth we had never heard of or tried these!

light sprinkle of sea salt and fresh cracked pepper very good and nicely self limiting (not at all a binge food just a great crispy snack!)

they went great with some ice cold Jamaica (hibiscus) tea

I had deep fried it a few times it was ok but really fragile and too greasy to sit and snack on

this is light, crispy, salty and the nice kind of bitter

I am going to do a little toasted sesame oil with crushed toasted sesame seed and a dash of red chile next time

anyone tried this with other greens like collards? they may be a bit too bitter I think and other lighter greens probably have to much water

I loved how it popped in the oven and it smelled good not that smell greens can have sometime.

so thank you thank you who ever you are ! where ever that thread went!

Can you document how you did this? I remember the kale chip thread from before but not exactly how it worked.

So you cut out the stems? What temperature and how long did you roast?

absolutely I took big pieces of curley kale and cut the stalks off and fed them to my dogs (I now regret that move green bombs going off every five minutes!)

took the leaves and left them big just tossed in olive oil and then put them loosely on on a parchment lined cookie pan (I dont think you need the parchment but I am addicted to it)

cooked in the oven at 300 convection roast I bet 350 would be fine for regular bake

watched for about 15 min (give or take I was not exacty when i heard them popping and crackling and they smelled done I tested one and they were all done except a few I put back to crisp up

took them out tossed them with salt and pepper and that was it

Nancy I am not kidding when I say these are outstanding!

let me know what you think!

that with the ice cold Jamaica tea made with fizzy water was the best lunch/snack (it was my lunch today actually!)

I would serve this to company with iced herb teas wine or beer for sure

so freaking easy so good!

I really wish our rabbit would have told us how good kale is. I only have ever fed it to her. Silly rabbit, lol.

thanks no I missed that one too
I think it was a guy who started it actually but can not remember

anyway I put the ones I did not eat in a container and today they are really still very crispy and good

I feel completely safe/pleased and virtuous making this because I adore making the best out of fresh vegetables

these really speak KALE and totally enhance all the wonderful flavor!

I would put this on a plate next to a hamburger or steak for sure! even grilled fish would be good

I just put kale on my grocery list - I shop Wednesday afternoon after a visit to my "miracle worker" (hair stylist). I have NEVER, to my knowledge, even tasted kale and I haven't a clue about buying it - is there one kind that's better than another for this purpose? You know, like the difference between regular cabbage and Savoy?

good question and yes there are several Kales including purple ones for this I really like the curly Kale the texture is just fantastic when it is crispy my husband and I kept grabbing for the tightly bunched crispy pieces

I hope you like it

do you like greens Glenda? it is not as strong as a collard but has a lot of flavor and a little bitter but good bitter. It is also a wonderful soup green. Portuguese sausage and kale together is outstanding!
can not wait to hear!

Clearmommy you had lucky bunnies!

How many cups full would I expect to get from a "bunch" of kale? Like others, I've never tasted it.

I am not sure how to answer this I am sorry
I can say they do not have much water in the leaves at all so when you roast them they do not shrink much at all maybe 1/3?
so if you look at a bunch and then figure the stems are coming off the leaves crispy are about a third smaller than the leaves fresh

does this help?

not everyone likes greens so I hope you enjoy these as much as I have

anyone try them yet?

Lizzy you are most welcome I just wish I could remember who I need to thank

Yes, your estimate helps. Thank you.
Now my problem is to find kale! I went to a larger town last night & thought sure they would have it, but perhaps Monday isn't a good day to shop for produce as it looked like they were low on several things. Anyway, I didn't find any; but I'm going to keep looking.

I hope I can find some to try this. If I like it, then I could probably plant some this spring.
