Default Egg prices!

Has anyone noticed how egg prices have skyrocketed!?! A dozen large eggs use to be aroun $1.50 and now close to $3! Why is this?

Yes I've noticed this...I'm sure they try to blame it on the price of gas but it's ridiculous.

It's not just the price of gas (which is a factor in shipping), its' also the price of grain. You know all the gas pumps you see that say the gas has 10% ethanol? That ethanol is made from grain... the very grain that used to be used to feed the chickens, hogs and cattle. (The ones that aren't free range, or totally pastured, in the case of cattle and hogs)

So anyhow, enough grain is being diverted to ethanol production, which means there isn't as much available for feed. It now costs more to feed the chickens, which means it costs more to produce eggs.

The additional factor is heightened standards having been put in place for chicken houses (I'm not joking), including more space per chicken. This cost to the chicken farmers is being passed along to the consumer, of course and there will be no relief from this cost for quite some time, according to the article I read recently.

Gas and cost of grain are only a minor part of the equation per my sources.

Chickens have nicer cribs. We're paying for happy chickens, just like those happy California cows.

Part of it is the price in gas. Not to mention though that you have to transport the eggs. But also the price of housing the chickens and heating their coops. Energy prices are higher than ever.

There has been a big increase in grain prices. Eggs are just the first step. Just wait and see what happens to the price of beef in the next few months.

That too.

Egg prices are traditionally lowest in the spring (right around Easter time), because that's when the hens lay the most eggs. This time of year, prices are traditionally higher because hens have really slowed down in their egg laying - they're just a lot higher this year than usual, because of all the other factors that have been mentioned.

Eggs here have gone crazy - I hate it!!
But I found an egg farm/outlet that sells directly at half the price that the same brand sells for in the store. I'm getting a dozen for 1.39 - they are 2.99 in the store.
Maybe you can find one near you?

We pay 2.99 for 36 eggs in Costoco in Northern VA. I am sure it is x2 or x3 in regular supermarket.
