Ingredients in TotalWhole grain wheat, sugar, calcium carbonate, corn syrup, salt lactose, distilled monoglycerides, vitamin C (sodium ascorbate), zinc and iron (mineral nutrients), vitamin E (tocopheryl acetate), niacinamide, calcium pantothenate, annatto extract color, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride), vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B1 (thiamin mononitrate), folic acid, vitamin A (Palmitate), vitamin B12, and vitamin D. Freshness is preserved by BHT, a synthetic antioxidant (preservative).

Now, based on this list of ingredients, this would not be an acceptable choice on SBD. But you say it says whole grain wheat? it also says sugar as the 2nd ingedient and corn syrup 4th....very bad!

This is one of the reasons I like what I learned following SB....reading ingredient lists and not just counting carbs was what I needed to learn.

And you base this on what?

I dunno, that "low" and "moderate" have different letters in them?

IME...and my experience with South Beach is deep....is that it is very much of a controlled low carb plan, just not as low as others. If anything below 130 grams a day is considered to be low carb, then SBD does fit this bill to a "T".

Wellllll, there really isn't any point to arguing this non-point, in a way -- as the argument was not ever about the specific number of carbs any eating plan had anyway. It was simple comments on differing perspectives; those on eating plans allowed more carbs and which were benevolent toward whole-grains, would be more likely to find some kind of cereal for breakfast a decent choice than those plans which allowed less carbs. That's all. I think we all agree on that and it's obvious just from the thread.

Person A says moderate carb, person B says "low" and "moderate" result in some different perspective about this sort of thing, person C says moderate is the same as low, because some 4th definition of 'low' includes what some yet-other people consider 'moderate' -- I mean that's funny, we could be here all day.

No doubt south beach is a controlled-carb plan and vastly lower than the standard western diet, nobody said otherwise. On the whole you and I are on the same page and I greatly respect what you've accomplished with your health and that you take the time to share that with others.

Best,
PJ

I do eat a small amount of whole grain every day.....but didn't as I was losing my weight. It was the one thing that when I took it out of my food, I'd see loss...with it, I wouldn't. It really is a YMMV thing.

What I will not eat is processed grain that is in a cereal box....especially if it has sugar added. I don't even know if Total is one of those but if it is, its a big on my list.
I do eat Quaker "old fashioned oats", not instant, and add in H&H on top and some cut up fruit....very nice! It does not cause me cravings at all...its very filling and keeps me full for many hours.

One thing that I have experienced with the cravings thing is simply the longer I stayed on my plan, consistently, the easier its become....cravings are a thing of my past.
I now eat 1-2 pieces of fruit per day and 1-2 servings of a starch, along with my proteins and veggies....the more exercise I do, the more starches I eat.

On the weekends when I'm not walking as much as when I'm working, I generally eat less. A starch for me today is either 1 slice of Ezekiel toast, 1 Wasa, 1/2 cup sweet potato, peas and carrots, butternut squash or 1/2 cup of oatmeal. Those are my choices.

We all need to find which ones work for us...or not...and create our food plan based on what we learn about our body....as this is all a big science experiment as we learn about our individual body......YMMV is what is key here.

I was JUST telling my husband I thought this was how you ate and made it work! I'm so glad you posted this.

The arguments about various plans allowing different carb counts are moot point when the OP has "general low carb" as her plan of choice.
