Your bad cholesterol probably isn't really bad. You need to consider that 50% of the people having heart attacks have low "bad cholesterol", so it is a pretty poor indicator of any problem.
What tracks better are triglycerides and HDL. If your triglycerides are low, like below 100, then your LDL cholesterol is likely to be large and harmless. If your HDL is high, that also offers you protection.
I'd recommend that you look into an NMR cholesterol test which tells you whether or not you have the neutral sort of LDL (large) or the bad sort of LDL (small, dense particles).
