Default spaghetti squash lesson

I cooked my spaghetti squash by my usual method of poking alot of holes in it and microwaved it. After it cooled I cut it in half, and found all the seeds were sprouted inside. I scrapped the sprouts out with the seeds like I normally do. When I tried a bite of the meat part of the squash though it was horrid.

So lesson of the day, once it's sprouted, it's not worth it

Sounds like something which might well have happened to me if I had a microwave. I just attack the thing with a hatchet until it's cut in two, scrape the seeds out, and bake face down in a little water in the oven until it's pokable.

Congratulations on your success, by the way.

Kay

That had to be one old squash!!!

They are basically winter squash so it would make sense that it would have sprouted. I know around here you can't even buy them in the summer.

If I had taken out the seeds first, I maybe coul dof planted it. Although here I doubt anything would grow. Once it was cooked I figured microwaves were not healthy for young plants. I remember having potatos around so long they used to sprout, just because I have never really been a large potato eater.

I use an old, beat up large kitchen knife with a rubber mallet to get squash open.

I still think a pumpkin carving saw is the easiest way to open them (before they are cooked lol)

missymagoo - They are like a potato. Make sure you poke holes through the outside skin so the hot steam can vent. I stab it with a fork or steak knife a few times before popping it in.

I've had the best success by cutting the things in half CROSSWISE (the crosswise cut makes it easier to get all the seeds and strings, without getting any of the flesh, than cutting it lengthwise), scooping out the seeds and strings, rinsing each half off, and then nuking the halves with just the water left from rinsing and covered loosely (plastic wrap if it won't touch the squash, or wax paper if it will touch.) My microwave has a "fresh vegetable" setting that senses when they're done. Works great.
