Default High Blood Pressure Medication and Potassium

Hi, I was reading on the web that you shouldn't take potassium supplements with Micardis Plus. I can't see my doctor for about a month due to back log of appointments.

Has anyone ever heard of this? Tks

Some hbp meds rob the body of potassium, some build potassium up.

If it's a few pills it probably won't hurt but you need to check with your doctor.

talk to your pharmacist. it doesn't even have to be the pharmacy you get your drugs from. and pharmacists know more about drug interactions and side effects than drs.

Default potassium

Always wondered why I never saw a potassium supplemt that had over
90 mg. Seems strange given the fact that rda of potassium is over 3000
mg per day. Regarding HBP medication leading to potassium defiency,
diuretics are the main culprit.

You are so right Babe! I have asked Pharmacists about all kinds of stuff....and also look up on the web (http://www.rxlist.com/). Docs are taught what meds to order for what, but Pharmacists are educated in the way we metabolise meds, interactions with other drugs and foods, side effects and more!

Potassium can be dangerous too. Hyperkalemia is too much potassium. Mild hyperkalemia causes few, if any, symptoms. A high level of potassium in the blood is dangerous. It can cause the heart rhythm to become abnormal. If the level is very high, the heart can stop beating.

Certain medications and disorders can make you more or less prone to potassium excess or depletion....or make the effects worse. This is why potassium levels are usually checked whenever blood work is done. Taking 4-5 pills that are 99mg each probably isn't going to be dangerous..especially if you're drinking large amounts of fluids and not taking any meds that hold onto potassium, but if you were to take 4-5 when they are 500mg each? That's a different story.

The FDA has decided that too much potasium at once can cause stomach problems, so they picked a real conservative number <100mg per dose. I believe the limits are higher in the UK.
